5.0 out of 5 stars One of the towering classics of the cancer-prevention diet, January 20, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Despite its somewhat lurid title, this book, by a Professor of Music at Ball State University and his wife, is one of the most accessible introductions to what is said to be the cancer-prevention diet also known as macrobiotics. The Kohlers are wonderful writers and their anecdotal approach and confessional style together with their university-trained minds make for a revelatory read. Studied together with Dr. Anthony Sattilaro's book, "Recalled by Life," they offer a unique education not in a "New Age" diet, but in the traditional approach to food that people possessed for thousands of years. The secret of this diet is its low protein/no sugar (meaning no sweets of any kind including so-called "good" sweeteners like fruit juice, honey, agave syrup, maple syrup etc.). Macrobiotics teaches that cancer cells need protein and sugar to grow; that's the great secret, often too simple for western minds to accept. Warning: these are my opinions. I am not an expert, only a journalist.
