5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this soundtrack!!!
What a soundtrack! I have listened to other Mancini albums, but this arguably is his best non-greatest hits album. It is very listenable from beginning to end. The bonus track on the import is interesting for the addition of vocals (Just For Tonight).

2.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, but lousy format.
Although the soundtrack to HATARI is quite enjoyable to listen to (obviously, dependent entirely upon one's taste in music), the format via which it was presented left quite a lot to be desired. What a soundtrack! I have listened to other Mancini albums, but this arguably is his best non-greatest hits album. It is very listenable from beginning to end. The bonus track on the import is interesting for the addition of vocals (Just For Tonight).

Hatari has three musical themes runing throught: the first is the title and "The Sounds of Hatari." Since this is set in Africa, these two tracks set the stage for actors to chase and capture wild animals.

For the comical side, you have the classic "Baby Elephant Walk," which exactly is what the music was for in the movie. This tune is equivalent to the Pink Panther theme in clearity and rememberance. The song has become an international hit and recorded by numerous artists over the decades. Reading IMDB website, Mancini had written Baby Elephant Walk on a whim while they were shooting the scene of the baby elephants. We also have "Your Father's Feathers" and "Crocodile, Go Home."

And on the cocktail side of things, we have "Just For Tonight", "Night Side", "Big Band Bwana", and "The Soft Touch."

The music is great! Henri Mancini at his best! Don't hesitate in buying it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, but lousy format., August 16, 2008

Although the soundtrack to HATARI is quite enjoyable to listen to (obviously, dependent entirely upon one's taste in music), the format via which it was presented left quite a lot to be desired. I missed during the order of this product that it is a CD-R (i.e. a copied CD, not an original) that is produced on demand. Unfortunately, the CD would not play in all equipment. I purchased this as a gift for a friend, and he was unable to get it to play on his high quality, component-based home entertainment system, but was able to play it via computer. He brought it to my attention, asking if I could get my money back for it. I tried playing the CD on my component-based system, and it occured as well for me. Not exactly what I expected, and certainly not what I hoped for. Bottom line, avoid this product; unlike me, don't be so cheap as to buy this release as opposed to the pressed CD which costs approximately double. I plan on keeping this copied version for the car, and springing for the more expensive version so my friend can listen to this great soundtrack on his home system, thereby enjoying it to the fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Score, October 19, 2008

A favorite movie score and highly recommended. Baby Elephant Walk was a pop hit for Mancini, however, it is the whole movie score that is really excellent. I understand the previous reviewer's frustration with the CD-R format though it is readable by virtually all CD players manufactured in the last few years. If this is a concern, Amazon also offers the Hatari/High Time combined soundtrack as a regular CD. Personally, I think that on-demand CD-Rs are a great idea.

When I was a 10 year old this classic Howard Hawks directed John Wayne movie with the fabulous Henry Mancini score made quite an impression on me. My Dad bought the LP album and we wore it out. We still have it, but, it's hard to enjoy the well thoughtout score due to the wear and tear. As I've gotten older I find myself enjoying the music and the movie even more. The CD is the same music with one additional vocal arrangement of an earlier instrumental that was not in the movie. My favorites are the intro and the classic African sunrise piece. It just shows the range and genius of Henry Mancini.

Saw the movie, loved it. The music just took me back. There is not any album yet of Mancini that I have not thoroughly enjoyed, and this one like the rest did not dissappoint.

It gets harder to find older CD albums. But the first place I always check is Amazon. The price is always reasonable, and you can find what I'm looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just love this soundtrack, March 6, 2011
This review is from: Hatari! (OST) (Audio CD)
I have always loved this movie. Came out before I was born, remember watching on TV as a kid.

The late Leigh Brackett wrote the screen play. She was writing "The Empire Strikes Back" at the time of her death.

I just love the music.
My favorite tracks are #1 "Theme From Hatari!" & track 7 "The Sounds of Hatari!". I can play these over & over again.

"Baby Elephant Walk" is of course the track everyone knows.

If you are a fan of the film or of the late Henry Mancini you will love this soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini at his best, December 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hatari! (OST) (Audio CD)
This purchase was as much a nostalgic one as anything else. Growing up my family (three sisters, mom and dad) spent hours listening to our Hatari album. It's still with us--- but shows its years of wear and tear and bad stereo needles managed by small children. We're now talking about re-creating our childhood album collection in CD for the family to enjoy, and this is one step toward that. It's nice to hear it again without the scratches and hisses and with the incomparable Mancini-style shining through.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hatari! (OST) (Audio CD)
I love Henry Mancini's music and one of his best compilation was for the movie Hatari with John Wayne. Great movie and even great music, so was pleased that I was able to purchase the CD through Amazon. It arrived on time, in perfect condition. Love Amazon and love that I can find even the most obscured movies and music.
