If you’ve read any books on creativity, the ideas within Hatch! won’t surprise you. There are no earth-shattering secrets here, but half the battle with practical books is getting the reader excited enough to practice. That’s why it’s a good thing C. McNair Wilson is at the helm, because his enthusiasm might convince you it’s the first time you’ve ever heard this stuff, and by golly, it's going to work!

Ever visited a Disney theme park? You’ve probably come across this one-time Imagineer’s brainstorming results and not even known it. If Happiest-Place-On-Earth-level creation doesn’t inspire you, I’m not sure what will.

But enough about the author's creds. What about the book itself?

I soon discovered that when reading Hatch!, how it's approached was key. McNair reminded me of the long-winded uncle we see once a year at Thanksgiving. Throughout my first read-through, I was like an old lady in an 80s fast food ad: Where’s the beef? Hatch! is filled with stories and anecdotes that require a little work to pull out the core. It wasn’t until I pulled back, relaxed, and accepted his playful style, that McNair’s levity and affable personality made his tangents (and sketches) a joy to read.

The first half of Hatch! focuses on the Seven Agreements of Creativity. They provide the rules of the road that keep unbridled creation front-and-center, until you can finally narrow down the menu of options to The One.

The second half is a smorgasbord of topics, including a fun section on doodling which illustrates (haha) how visual note-taking can be a boon to creative gold mining.

Also, it’s important to realize that while this book is focused on team and corporate brainstorming, many of the tips still apply to individual creation.

Do your latest ideas seem lackluster? Have you struggled with thinking outside the box? Maybe your workspace needs a redesign, you've forgotten how to play, and you never learned to doodle?

TRAGIC.

But fear not! There is a remedy to cure all ills. Brew some tea, get comfy cozy, and (gently) crack the spine of C. McNair Wilson's latest book, HATCH!

Anyone whose creative spirit needs a kick in the pants will surely benefit from McNair's wisdom and tried and true brainstorming techniques.

Buy the book. Read enthusiastically. Implement his methods. You will start producing some of the most vivid, exciting seeds you have ever grown!

Now, some of your ideas will still be crap. This is the nature of the beast. But a precious few will be so tantalizingly thrilling, you'll have no choice but to leap into them feet first, assuming brilliance from yourself (and others!) every step of the way.

Get this book and put your face in it!

C. McNair Wilson's book, "HATCH! Brainstorming Secrets of a Theme Park Designer" overflows with creative and concrete examples on how to motivate and implement "BIG QUESTION" thinking or "true brainstorming" for your organization. McNair insists, "Nobody knows how to brainstorm anymore." He rights this wrong by identifying the seven agreements of true brainstorming and sharing practical examples from his time dreaming and doodling with Disney colleagues--to infinity and beyond. And just when you think the practical instruction is over, Wilson gives more.
After a brief intermission, his own doodle--a single page illustration of a man in straw hat and plaid suit peddling gum and felt pens--Wilson provides instruction on story-boarding, cartooning lessons, and even blank doodle pages for reader enjoyment.

My favorite line from the book comes near the end when McNair identifies his "best day at Disney or anywhere on planet earth." I won't give it away, but it precedes a "Parental Advisory" more an admonition really, to become your child's cheerleader and biggest fan. I liked that.

HATCH is predominantly for organizations wanting to cultivate a creative, cooperative work environment and experience for their group. He writes, "Imagine you at your best, and a handful of your coworkers, all working brilliantly and playfully and enjoying it. That does not need to be merely your imagination. You can make it happen."

Wilson believes the "Maker's mark" is seen in the "built-in creative spirit" of every human being. "I look for brilliance in everyone," Wilson says.

As a public speaker, Wilson routinely distributes magic markers to his audience and encourages doodles during his dynamic presentations.

This book is an attack on everything in your brain which locks your wild ideas behind bars. Most people mistakenly think that creativity is rare. But in fact, we humans are all deeply creative, and we all face some amount of insecurity every time we try something new. "Hatch" describes the process, gets you unstuck, tells you what creative people face so that you know you're not alone. Look out... after reading it, you may find yourself designing and installing a miniature roller coaster in your living room.

I've owned this book for three weeks. Since then, I've purchased two for coworkers (and will likely purchase more). Plus, I've shared the 7 Agreements of Brainstorming with our staff at our annual staff retreat. We are already implementing much of what I shared.

My only regret when I tell others about HATCH! is that they cannot hear McNair personally. Having heard and met McNair on a couple of occasions, HATCH! was even better because I could "hear" McNair's voice as I read. If you ever get a chance to hear McNair in person - GO! His genius and creativity is contagious.

Whether you consider yourself creative or not, HATCH! will convince you that you are creative and McNair will help you learn how to unpack your creativity. HATCH! is for solo acts (writers, artists, teachers,) and corporate leaders. I highly recommend it for anyone wishing to make a difference in the world.
