Great for Vest or Bench,
By Dr Feelgood "dmk5n" (Atlanta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hatch Guide for New England Streams (Paperback)
This is not only a great streamside reference but nice to keep near the fly tying bench when attempting to match the hatch. There are excellent high quality photos of the bugs on the left hand side with info about the bugs habitat, etc... Also you get pictures of at least three corresponding flies with tips on how to fish them. The book covers Caddis, Mayflies, Stones, Terrestrials. I fish mainly in North Carolina and find the book extremely helpful.

A streamside gem,
By
This review is from: Hatch Guide for New England Streams (Paperback)
This little book is unique. It combines high quality photos of most of the New England streamside insects trout love to eat with examples of imitations we hope they'll try. The author, a professional photogapher, avid fly fisherman and amateur entomologist, has devised means to capture the appearance of these tasty bugs in perfect detail as they develop from their origins on the stream bottom to their emerging stages in the biologic drift to their mature forms, winged and mating on and above the surface. This book fits in a zip lock sandwich baggy in your hip pocket, and paired with your curiosity on the water, you will get streamside bug savvy and catch more trout.

Makes Me Feel Like An Expert,

I simply don't have the time to make an in-depth study to entomology. With this book I don't feel a need to. It has chapters on the basic techniques of fishing Wets, Dries, Nymphs, which I find very helpful. But what makes this book special is that Mr. Ames devotes a full page to each stage of most northeast flies, and describes where and when those insects can be found, how they behave, and how they can be caught.
Before I head to the stream, I simply read up on the insects I expect to find and, therefore, have a solid game plan in place when I step into the water. Also, the photography of the flies is great. This is one of the most used fly-fishing books I own. Randy

All the reviews for this book are stellar, so heres one more. I keep it by my fly tying desk, and can truely say that from reading and studying the photos from cover to cover several times. I have no problem telling whats hatching and what to use to get the trout to take.

A "must have" for New England fly fishers,
By Michael A. Davis "Appalachian Hiker" (Boynton Beach, Fl United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hatch Guide for New England Streams (Paperback)
Mr. Ames has done a monumental, exhaustive work here, but has somehow accomplished to present it in a friendly, organized format. You won't want to ever leave this book behind. He has joined what is obviously his two loves, entomology and photography, into a reference work that no New England fly fisher should be without. It's apparent that he knows his Latin, but he doesn't require you to know it! Mr. Ames is clearly an accomplished photographer, as these pictures of "bugs" in there habitat cannot be gotten easily. Not only that, but his photos of flies that match the "bugs" are also superb. As a bonus, Mr. Ames shares his presentation techniques for different "bugs" in various situations. But, the sum of the parts is even better than all these great elements. This work comes off as a book you don't want to put down ... that just doesn't happen everyday with a reference book! If you are in New England and you fly fish, you have to get this book!

Hatch Guide for New England Streams,
This review is from: Hatch Guide for New England Streams (Paperback)
This is an excellent reference for any fly angler interested in trout foods, the artificials used to represent the natural insects and tips on fishing to imitate the naturals. I find this work applicable to streams of the Appalachians as well as that of the Northeast.

An awesome book with great descriptions and full-page color photos. Probably not for a first-year fly fisher due to the technical nature of the book. I keep it near my fly-bench in the winter, and in my gear bag all summer.
