Sound Advice Sans Snobbery,
By
This review is from: No Hatch to Match: Aggressive Strategies for Fly-Fishing between Hatches (Paperback)
Rich is the kind of guy you wish your dad was when you were a kid trying to figure out the trout fishing game. He loves fishing and he knows the game thoroughly. Straight forward truths such as using large flies to catch large trout are explained succinctly. Never mind those snob books with titles such as how to catch large trout on tiny flies and whittled down 1/2 pound tippet, Rich sticks to methods that yield the highest probability of luring large trout to strike an artificial fly and then actually landing them. This book is great. Learn from a master to ambush trophy trout from small streams to giant rivers. I could not find a smidgen of bad advice in the book. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way, by trial and error. Gain 20 years of knowledge and start catching large trout from the outset of your fly fishing experience.

A flyfisher of more than 20 years, I found this book instantly useable and productive. It convinced me to practice and adopt methods I'd previously avoided and have since been catching larger fish on a fly, particularly on small water, than ever before.

Fly Tyers will Appreciate Rich's Ideas,

This review is from: No Hatch to Match: Aggressive Strategies for Fly-Fishing between Hatches (Paperback)
I had read Rich Osthoff's "Active Nypmhing" before reading "No Hatch to Match". I'm a fan of Rich's books. I have added some of Rich's fly patterns to my own fly box. I too like to modify and try and improve patterns in my own tying. So, reading about Rich's pattern modifications and what he's done to make improvements have given me a number of great ideas. I cut my teeth fly fishing the old Wooley Worm. So, I did not much convincing to try some of Rich's methods and patterns. The information on the 'Soft Hackled Wooley Worm' and 'Bi-Buger' are worth the price of one of Rich's books.

Fly fishing with dry flies when a hatch is on is relatively easy. Present the fly correctly, and the fish will usually take it. Obviously, you need to match the hatch and eliminate drag from the drift, but do these things and you'll have fish to show for you efforts. Being new at fly fishing, this book was very helpful in understanding what to do between hatches. My understanding of nymphs and emergers is much greater from reading this book. Now I am more confident about being able to catch fish regardless of what the conditions are. I highly recommend this book!

Rich Osthoff presents, in an almost scientific fashion, everything that you need to know when bugs are not coming off the water. He reviews topics like temperature, long-distance nymph fishing and streamer tactics. Since hatches are not the most common streamside scenario, it is amazing that more books have not been written on this topic. A good book for a flyfisher's library
