4.0 out of 5 stars Their best
This is one band that gets a really bad wrap that do not deserve it. I will be the first to admit their lyrics and vocals are pretty bad, but the music is right on point. There is so much neo-classical shredding on this album, and it really does help give it a pretty unique kind of flavor. The keyboards fit well due to the guitar sound being somewhat thin. "Cowards...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting...Part II
I repeat my review of "Something Wild..." here: "This was just a little too Yngwie Malmsteen for me. I was expecting a little bit more straight-forward thrash. It's not bad. Just not what I was expecting. There are lots of keyboards and the vocals, oh, the vocals, if you could call them that, are just high-pitched screams. It's very technical guitar and very fast-paced,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Their best, March 7, 2010
This review is from: Hatebreeder (Audio CD)
This is one band that gets a really bad wrap that do not deserve it. I will be the first to admit their lyrics and vocals are pretty bad, but the music is right on point. There is so much neo-classical shredding on this album, and it really does help give it a pretty unique kind of flavor. The keyboards fit well due to the guitar sound being somewhat thin. "Cowards Dead End" is a personal favorite and has a neo-classical inspired solo fest for the last minute. "Bed of Razors" seamlessly incorporates the keyboards into the song to create another favorite. There is not one bad song on here, some just better then others. There is a certain degree of cheese to this album, but its all par for the course. This is where they really had something fun and exciting to contribute to the metal world, they have since become increasingly irrelevant with every passing album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Neoclassical, August 27, 2008
This review is from: Hatebreeder (Audio CD)
Hatebreeder has cemented itself in my top 5 favorite albums largely because of the ultra melodic styling of the leads played by Laiho. The music comes across as heavy and aggressive but there are great melodies over top from the guitar and the keys. The cover of Aces High is a pretty great "blackened" version of the Maiden favorite. This album represents a style that has started disappearing in more recent Bodom work which still features shred but doesn't have as many complex melodies as this album does. You can find a lot of melodies that are reminiscent of melodies you might find in concert/"classical" music. No Bodom fan should be without it, any guitar fan should at least listen to it. Memorable tracks include "Silent Night, Bodom Night", "Toward Dead End" (renamed on this re-release "Cowards Dead End"), and "Downfall". Of course if you're one of those that can't get past the screaming, then you're not going to like it anyway. I encourage you to at least give it a shot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than "Follow the Reaper", February 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hatebreeder (Audio CD)
I recently listened to "Hatebreeder" and "Follow the Reaper" side by side, and while I have concluded from them that "Children of Bodom" are a much better band then "Are You Dead Yet" had me believe at first, it is "Hatebreeder" that gave me chills down my spine! Every song stands out on this album and the neoclassical guitar and keyboard work sets this band apart! While other offerings may be more hardcore, this album is the most musically interesting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, December 3, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Hatebreeder (Audio CD)
it has great guitar. i really cant beleive how Laiho can scream that much but it works out great. favorite songs on this cd are probably Black widow, Downfall, Silent night Bodom night, and Hatebreeder. this is a great cd. but if you dont like screaming...this is definately not for you. but if you like screaming, speed metal or anything like that you should listen to it. overall it is a very good metal cd. (if you like this also look at Hate Crew Deathroll. thats another great cd by Children of Bodom which includes Needled 24/7.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting...Part II, May 20, 2011

I repeat my review of "Something Wild..." here: "This was just a little too Yngwie Malmsteen for me. I was expecting a little bit more straight-forward thrash. It's not bad. Just not what I was expecting. There are lots of keyboards and the vocals, oh, the vocals, if you could call them that, are just high-pitched screams. It's very technical guitar and very fast-paced, which I like, but I don't really care for the Malmsteen-esque classical influence, the high-pitched scream vocals or the excessive, over-the-top, doom and gloom keyboards. I should have sampled these guys more before I purchased. If you are looking for a more straight-forward, less-niche sound, stick to the Exoduses and Slayers of the world." I will say that this release is a bit more refined. I CAN listen to this music, it isn't terrible, it just isn't my preference. I was thinking I would get something like 5FDP or maybe Shadows Fall, something newer but still in a Thrash-ish vein. Not so. I guess this is "black metal" or something like that. Whatever it is, not really my thing. Give me Megadeth or Pantera. Maybe I'm just too old...

First off, the guitar work is stellar, the drums are heavy and occassionally you hear some great bass work, but the vocals, god, they ended up driving me up a wall! It reminded me of a chained up pit bull. And that wouldn't be so bad, except nearly every song is like that!

It is good symphonic power metal, no doubt; like Dragonforce with a metalcore singer, but the vocals get annoying fast, I wish they would drop the vocals and be instrumental. Did I mention the vocals get annoying fast?

2.0 out of 5 stars Vocals Ruin It, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Hatebreeder (Audio CD)
This band has got tons of talent.
Soaring, ripping guitars with the best of them.
Tight driving bass.
Tight, crisp, FAST drumming.
All that wouldn't mean anything, but unlike so many heavy bands these guys have melody.
Melody, structure etc...
Until:
The Vocals.
How friggin' annoying!
Can we have enough of the death metal vocals please already?
Anyone can do a Cookie Monster Impression.
