An essential for students of millinery,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hats Design and Construction (Spiral-bound)
As someone with a serious interest in Millinery, I found this text book to be extremely informative. Most areas of hat-making are covered in step by step detail. This is a text I would recommend to anyone intested in the various methods of hatmaking, from sewn to blocked felts and straws. It even contained small samples of foundation materials, which I have found really useful when order materials in the US from Australia where we call them by different names.

One of the best , most complete instructions books available,

Basic text for learning millinery on one's own. One of the best and most complete instructions books available. The broad range of topics includes workroom equipment and supplies, complete step-by-step instructions on how to make patterns and sew various styles of hats: wooden blocks, felts, straws, bridal headdresses and children's hats. A wonderful resource as it contains actual fabric samples used for foundations, coverings and trim.

HATS: Design and construction by Stella V. Remiasz,

This review is from: Hats Design and Construction (Spiral-bound)
Vey clearly written, loaded with very practical information. It is an excellent 'how-to' working manual, not a book of hat pictures. A wide variety of hat and brim styles and their construction is dealt with. Material swatches and illustrations for flat patterns are included.
A worthwhile manual for milliners. Excellent value

Great Hat Book,

This book is a winner for anyone starting out in Millinery. It is well structured and laid out as lesson plans. There is a comprehensive section on types of headwear, millinery fabrics and materials which is followed by instructions for the design and construction of a range of basic hat styles. The typed format and slightly amateur line drawings are a little off-putting at first, but the content is excellent and the exercises are clear, well written and easy to follow. The book has enough well-rounded information to provide a solid introduction. There are even samples of different millinery materials! Highly recommended!

This book far exceeded my hopes-- I'd bought books before that showed how to make simple sewn designs and now I wanted to learn more. I ordered From the Neck UP and a few other millinery books through the library, to figure out which book I should buy. From the Neck Up was good, but the instructions felt a little over my head. I couldn't get the book I'm reviewing here from the library to check it out first, but I decided to buy it because I thought it might be like From the Neck Up but more simply explained. Some reviewers complained about the binding and drawings but I decided to take a chance. So. I love this book! For one thing, the spiral binding is a help in an instruction book, because it lets me lay the book open to the page I am following. The drawings are fine, This book turns out to be a detailed personal course in both fundamental and sophisticated millinery techniques, in great detail and clearly written. I feel as though I am in millinery school with a very student-friendly teacher who wants to be sure I master what I am learning. I don't really understand the critical review, perhaps the person was hoping for a prettier book with inspiring images of hats--by the way, Millinery by Jane Loewen has mouth-watering images of hats, in line drawings mostly, but there's enough inspiration in that book for years of hat making--but whatever their reason for being unhappy, I'm so glad I wasn't put off by the review. This book is miles ahead of the other millinery books I've had before. So, to help other shoppers, I'd summarize this book as an excellent book for a home-sewing amateur who is seriously interested in making hats and wants to be able to make more than simple sewn hats such as sun hats, baseball caps, berets and turbans

If you've ever taken a millinery course, or want to, this is the absolute ideal text to have. It covers all the material my instructor covered, and, if I had had it before I took the course, I wouldn't have had to take notes! I recommend this for all instructors and students of millinery in particular, and fashion generally.

Great millenery book!,
This review is from: Hats Design and Construction (Spiral-bound)
This book is for everyone who wants to know all the materials, tools and styles for hatmaking. It is filled with patterns, fabric swatches, instructions, and the best glossary for hat styles I've seen. I recommend this book for starting and advanced milleners. It is the most comprehensive book I've found so far. The instructions are very well written and easy to use.

disappointing,
This review is from: Hats Design and Construction (Spiral-bound)
This book is an unprofessionally bound wad of paper. It has absolutely no photographs in it, is all HAND-TYPED and has amateur drawings as descriptions. I can draw better than this myself. It should be clearly described and it is not.
I am disappointed with this purchase and because I am in the UK and it has been sent to me from USA at fast delivery rate it is not worth the money for me to send it back. It has already cost me $10 above it's price.

This book covers the areas of what do I use and how do I do it. It covers some of the history and styles through the ages as well as helping a person get started in making hats. It is an excellent source for anyone wanting to learn to design and make hats of different kinds. It was the text for a class I took at the community college. Excellent source for the beginner.

This book teaches most or all of the basic millinery skills, however, the book itself seems to be less than professionnally made.
