From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8-Biographies of some of the world's great leaders, presented in an attractive format. The first sections recount the lives of the rulers, providing historical background and descriptions of their accomplishments. The second sections explore the day-to-day lives of the people of the time. The food, clothing, occupations, home, religion, and family life are presented in lively texts that are full of intriguing detail. The beauty rituals of the women in ancient Rome and Egypt are particularly interesting. These sections firmly place each ruler in a cultural and historical context, and help develop an understanding of the time period that shaped the subject's life. The third sections offer original accounts in the form of diaries, letters, stories, or poems written by contemporaries of the rulers and add immediacy to the study of the period. The layout is clean, with plenty of white space and full-color photographs of artifacts, artwork, and maps. These books provide enough information for beginning research, and are appealing enough to tempt browsers.
