From the Author

Although "Hatsukoi." is the second released in the REN'AI RENSAI series, it is the first chronologically. The whole series can be read in any order - the series # is merely a suggestion.

More About the Author

Hildred Billings is a Japanese and Religious Studies scholar who has spent her entire life knowing she would write for a living someday. She has lived in Japan a total of three times in three different locations, from the heights of the Japanese alps to the hectic Tokyo suburbs, with a life in Shikoku somewhere in there too. When she's not writing, however, she spends most of her time talking about Asian pop music, cats, and bad 80's fantasy movies with anyone who will listen...or not.

Her writing centers around themes of redemption, sexuality, and death, sometimes all at once. Although she enjoys writing in the genre of fantasy the most, she strives to show as much reality as possible through her characters and situations, since she's a furious realist herself.

Currently, Hildred lives in Oregon with her cat, with dreams of maybe having another human around someday.

"Hatsukoi." (meaning 'First Love' in Japanese) is the second book in the Ren'Ai Rensai series. The series is the story of the relationship of two Japanese women, Aiko and Reina. The series spans the time of about 20 years, from their first meeting to their marriage and beyond. Even though this is a series, the books can be read out of order and they themselves aren't in chronological order. For example, in the first book "Daisuki." (I Love You) we meet Aiko and Reina twenty years into their relationship. This second book, we are taken back to the winter of 1992 when they first meet and become a couple.

Reina is spending her time sleeping her way through the Tokyo lesbian scene (nothing new there) and performing in an idol group at a scummy theater. Aiko we find studying English at a women's university and trying to ward off her creepy ex-boyfriend, Daisuke. Michiko also appears throughout this book as she hasn't yet moved back to America (in the first book she resides in California).

Aiko is unsure of her sexuality during this time period. She's only dated men, but has never felt anything towards them. Even though she hasn't ever felt particularly amorous towards a man, she's never considered that she might not be straight. Meeting Reina, a member of the same musical group as her cousin, she's introduced to the first (two!) lesbians she's ever met. For some reason, she finds herself drawn to Reina. She can't get her off her mind. After some innocent flirting she accepts a date with Reina, but keeps their budding relationship secret from family and friends. Instead she tells them she's dating a mysterious fake man named Ren Itou.

Reina (aka Ren Itou, lol!) is unsure if she's ready to be someone's girlfriend.

I am now officially a loyal fan of the Renai Rensai series after reading the second book, Hatsukoi. The first one was great, it introduced us to the characters of Aiko and Renai, a lesbian couple who have been together for twenty years. In this book we get to see how our two protagonist meet. The love story of teenaged Aiko and Reina is sweet, sexy and full of youthful angst and lust. There is a tenderness between the young women that we know in later years turns into profound love. Reading the book was a lot of fun as we get to see the two characters experience the excitement of first love. I just adore this book and recommend to anyone interested in reading about "new adult" romance.

Although you can read this series in any order, "Hatsukoi."is the second published book from Hildred Billings, and dare I say it is one heck of a great lesbian romance. We travel in time back to winter if 1992-1993, when a young Aiko meets, though she doesn't know it at the time, the love of her life Reina. Just like in Hildred's debut novella "Daisuki," the dialogue is superb (and I was able to understand the tidbits of the Japanese language thrown in the book!), the feelings of the characters were genuinely felt, and, of course, the sex scenes are nothing short of amazing. If "Daisuki" made me a fan of Hildred, then this book has ensured that she will be one of my favourite authors.

"Hatsukoi." is the second story in the Ren'Ai Rensai series and it is every bit as good as its predecessor "Daisuki.". Here we get Reina and Aiko's origin story, from their first meeting through the early days of their relationship, with a lot of character development, not to mention the great sex scenes. Billings is a talented writer and "Hatsukoi." is a very satisfying read.

While there's no set order, I'm seconding the other reviewer: I think reading "Daisuki." first did add to my enjoyment of "Hatsukoi." So I recommend reading both and in the publication order. Definitely check this series out!

Right off the heels of Daisuki, the first in the Ren'Ai Rensai series, Hatsukoi is a fabulous work of art. While Daisuki had me fall in love with Reina and Aiko, Hatsukoi solidified my following in the series. Small, little things really makes the characters stand out, and they are clearly well-defined. Following the two of them on Aiko's journey felt like a treat, and I only want to know more.

I would like to recommend that, although these are stand-alone works, I really felt like reading Daisuki first aided in my enjoyment of the two works, so please try out both!
