Great reading for new and old visitors to Hatteras,

This review is from: Hatteras Island: Keeper of the Outer Banks (Paperback)
This was a great book for learning the history of Hatteras Island and it's surroundings. I bought it on my first trip to Hatteras and was very intrigued by all of the history and pictures it had in it. It was a fairly quick read and I was able to go to the places on Hatteras Island and know a lot more about them then I would had I not read the book. It is a great book for those who live on Hatteras, are visiting the Island or for those who would like to visit. It is a "tour guidebook" in a sorts and should be read by anyone visiting the Hatteras area. Great buy!

When you think of the iconic light house, you're thinking of Hatteras Island, whether you know it or not. "Hatteras Island: Keeper of the Outer Banks" is an introduction to the story of Hatteras Island, the island with a famous history that stretches back to the earliest days of American colonization by the Europeans. Covering everything from lost colonies to famous catastrophes, "Hatteras Island" is of strong interest to any curious about northeastern nautical history.

Each essay beautifully captures the rugged spirit and natural beauty of the Outer Banks. These are real-life stories from the islands which have experienced hurricanes, pirates, the Civil War, mysteriously sunken ships, German subs threatening the coast in 1942, the first Titanic distress signal, and more. Anyone interested in the sea or history or just great stories will want to read this treasure of a book about North Carolina's remote Outer Banks.

This is not your typical travelog. I've been visiting Hatteras Island regularly for the past 16 years but it's only after reading this book that I've begun to feel like a native. I can't wait to get back down there because I know what I've learned will enhance the experience for years to come. In one way, I kind of hope it doesn't bring more tourists. "It has to do with the spirit of vacationers who would rather come to a run-down cottage. . .than to a luxury resort elsewhere." That's my spirit Mr. McAllister's talking about. Give me a run-down cottage on Hatteras Island over Hawaii or Florida anytime.
