Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Composer David T. Little's work is often political in nature. The Haunt of Last Nightfall, which explores the 1981 El Mozote, El Salvador massacre, is no exception. Performed by Third City Percussion. Mr. Little's highly theatrical, often political work draws upon his experience as a rock drummer, and fuses classical and popular idioms to dramatic effect. His music has been performed throughout the world. ...'every bad-ass new-music ensemble in (New York City) will want to play him.' - Alex Ross

Review

David T. Little is quickly gaining a reputation as an opera composer of substantial promise, but 'Haunt of Last Nightfall,' a percussion work just over half an hour long, shows that his dramatic instincts extend well beyond the theatrical stage. Billed as a 'ghost play' inspired by a 1981 massacre in El Salvador, the music moves from rusticity through violence, despair and outrage in this eloquent account by Chicago's versatile, resourceful Third Coast Percussion. --New York Times, Steve Smith

This is some of the most powerful, emotionally engaging, dynamic, stunningly creative, expressive music ever written or performed. Composed and produced by David T. Little and performed by Third Coast Percussion with five additional musicians adding among other things, electric bass and guitar and Ableton synth. The recording was made at the University of Notre Dame's Performing Arts Center concert hall. The acoustics captured on this recording are absolutely gorgeous. I don't think there has ever been a recording that has captured this huge of a dynamic range with such power, openness, clarity, and depth. From the most delicate, quiet sounds to absolutely raging, roaring tempests, this is one of the very best examples of how to record, mix, master and produce a CD that can deliver the full beauty and impact of a musical performance.

And what an amazing performance! This piece of music is in two parts (or acts) and is 31:39 in length. David Little composed this gripping, somewhat haunting piece with thoughts in his mind about the senseless massacre of innocent families at El Mazote, El Salvador. An entire village was murdered; children, women, men, all violently exterminated, raped, tortured, by USA backed Salvadoran militia with USA supplied weapons and training. It took place over three days, Dec. 10, 11 and 12, 1981. David Little, (nor I), hadn't known that this had even happened, until reading about it fairly recently.. An entire village erased because it was caught in the crossfire of a stupid ideological battle. Mr. Little felt haunted by the thought that virtually no one here knew or cared about this atrocity at that time, and he couldn't shake off the ghosts, (or memory), of this evil barbarity for many months.
