Nancy is at Deer Mountain Lodge to help her father with a case involving jewel thieves and soon finds another mystery. A haunted bridge! How Nancy solves both mysteries and competes in a golf tournament despite her injurred arm is exciting and fun reading.

Best Nancy Drew of Series, My Daughter and I Agree,
This review is from: The Haunted Bridge (Nancy Drew, Book 15) (Hardcover)
This is the best Nancy Drew story of the entire series. My daughter and I have read both versions, my older copy published in the thirties and the newer version I purchased for her for her birthday. She prefers the newer version, while I like the older one, but we both agree this is the best of the series. I remember reading my copy four or five times in my youth.
I understand this series was written by many different people using the same pen-name. They really knew what they were doing. A ghostly scarecrow, a mysterious jewel box, an obnoxious admirer, and girls on an unsupervised vacation. What a way to appeal to girls of all ages, even grown-up ones. I think they got the formula just right for this one. This is still one of my favorite feel-good, read-again books. My daughter is reading her copy again as I am writing this.

Awesome book!,

I really liked this book!
In this one, there is a lot of stolen jewlery, a rumor about bridge being haunted near the Deer Mountain Hotel where Nancy is staying, etc., and on top of it all, a man who constantly follows Nancy and who might be a forger! Nancy also enters a golf tournament and even though it sounds really boring (unless you like golf), it wasn't boring. This book is very exciting! Read it!

Ok...I'll admit it...it was my worst Nancy Drew.,
By Cecily Millen (NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Haunted Bridge (Nancy Drew, Book 15) (Hardcover)
Having read almost all the Nancy Drews up to Number 51, I must say this one was one of my least favorites, infact my worst Nancy Drew. There was no suspense, you solved the mystery in the beggining, and there was a golf tournament which basically had nothing to do with it. Plus, it just wasn't as good as one of my fav's like The Clue Of The Broken Locket , etc. I really have enjoyed the other Nancy Drew's!

The Haunted Bridge Book Review,
By A 12-year old reader (Cerritos, Ca. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Haunted Bridge (Nancy Drew, Book 15) (Hardcover)
This story is about an 18-year old gorl, Nancy Drew, who finds herself in a mystery on a haunted bridge. She is qualifying to play in the golf tournament when a boy named Ned tells her about the bridge being haunted with a ghost guarding it. Her father tells her about a jewel thief that they are trying to locate. A man named Barty is suspected by nancy because of his various handwriting styles. Then she finds a Margaret Judson who she thinks is the jewel thief. Miss Drew finds many clues... I thought this book was very fun and enjoying. It was the first Nancy Drew book that I've ever read. I like to read mystery and suspense stories where you suspect one person and it turns out he was innocent all the time and it was someone else all along. I have read "The Boxcar Children" books before and also enjoyed them because of the mystery. My least favorite part is how in real life suspects are usually smart enough to escape, but in the two Nancy Drew books I've read, the culprit is never wise to get away from the officer. However, Nancy Drew always completes a mystery fairly making sure the right person is punished. When I first started it, I couldn't put it down.My favorite part of the story was when Nancy's two best friends - Bess and George... They called the police and were proud of themselves for what they did... Overall, I enjoyed reading "The Haunted Bridge" and suggest for you to read it also. When you do, I hope you find it was good as I did.

I have read many Nancy Drew books, and this one was the worst. It gave away the whole mystery in the beginning. I couldn't even finish the book.

a great role model,
By Karen Sampson Hudson "Karen Sampson Hudson" (Reno, NV United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

If you can, get the old editions of the Nancy Drew mysteries. I mean the truly old ones which refer to her "roadster" and her "chums" Bess and George, and the faithful housekeeper Hannah who always provided hot cocoa and comfort. In spite of an occasional unreconstructed, politically incorrect detail or two, these books are gems. Nancy's character was a wonderful role model for girls growing up in the 40s and 50s. Free and unfettered, supremely confident and clever, Nancy led her readers down a merry path of good times and entertaining adventures.
"The Haunted Bridge" is among the best of the series, although all of the earlier books are wonderfully written and capable of delighting young readers still. As for the later books, written by someone else to capitalize on the success of the tv show, I haven't read them so I can't offer opinions. I do know it would be hard to match the dozens of books beginning in the l930s.

Great Book , Wrong name,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Haunted Bridge (Nancy Drew, Book 15) (Hardcover)
The older version of The Haunted Bridge was published in the late 1930's. It is a wonderful book with the wrong title name; which is easily noticed by the mid-section of the book. Although this book is not as full of action as many other books in the series, it still contains much fun. It has an obnoxious man who likes Nancy, a parted romance, a burned down mansion, and a stolen jewelry case. This book is obviously like no other book in the Nancy Drew collection and is recommended for any one who likes a great book.

I really enjoy reading the Applewood facsimile Nancy Drew books "As you remember them!" They are a lot of fun, if not the finest that literature has to offer, pretty close! Re-reading this book was like walking down Memory Lane. It is true that it is not the best in the series, but with a character like Mortimer Bartiscue and a golfing theme, how can you go wrong?

The Haunted Bridge,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Haunted Bridge (Nancy Drew, Book 15) (Hardcover)
The Haunted Bridge is about a girl named Nancy Drew. She is staying at Deer Mountain Hotel with her father because her father is trying to solve a mystery about jewelry thieves. He tells her that inside of the stolen compact is a picture of a little, about 7 year old child. Ever since Mr. Drew became a detective, Nancy has become interested in mysteries. With her at the hotel she has her two best friends named George Fayne and Bess Marvin. At the hotel she also meets a male friend, whom she is not too sure that she can trust yet. His name is Martin Bartescue. Nancy is attending is a big golf tournament at the hotel. While practicing on the golf course, she hits her autographed golf ball across a bridge and into the woods. Her caddy refuses to retrieve it because the bridge is haunted. Nancy is very upset but goes on with her game. The next day Nancy goes to visit the bridge and tries to find her ball. To her surprise she sees a white figure and hears moaning. She still goes in and finds out that it is just a scarecrow. When she looked from an upper view she saw a bright object buried under ground, but partly exposed. She then went down to see it and finds that it was not a ball, but a very expensive jewelry compact. After a lot of hard work she finally forced the compact open. Inside of it were many expensive jewels and a picture of a little, seven year old child. Was this the stolen compact and who did it belong to? Did they put the scarecrow there and what was that moaning sound? My favorite character is Nancy because she is very adventurous and brave. I think I can relate to her in several of ways. I am not much into mysteries, but when I can, I like to try and solve things. I also love taking risks, not as much as Nancy, of course, but some little risks. Nancy doesn't fully trust Martin. Sometimes I don't really trust people either. I don't avoid them, as Nancy does, but I keep an eye on them. I think this is a wonderful book. It makes me feel worried as Nancy was. My favorite part is when Nancy finds out what caused the moaning sound and who put up the scarecrow. My least favorite part is when Nancy has the golf tournament. I find it irrelevant and boring. I think that it would be more interesting if Martin had something to do with the jewelry mystery. At the beginning I thought he was one of the jewelry thieves. I also thought something important would happen with him. I definitely would recommend this book to other people. It is funny, surprising, and definitely scaring. I always fell asleep wondering what will happen next. This book does not necessarily have to be read by mystery lovers. Personally, I am not one, but I enjoyed the book anyway. It is a great story with suspense and humor! |
