The year was 1978, and Pierre S. du Pont IV was the governor of Delaware. He and his wife, Elise, who usually resided in their Rockland, Delaware home, were spending the night in Woodburn in search of the legendary spirits living there. Teamed with two of their children, Benjamin, 14, and Eleuthere, 11, Mrs. du Pont's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wood, and Mrs. Wood's gray poodle, they all were anxious to do some ghostbusting of their own.
Although they had heard the many stories about the several ghosts inhabiting the house, the spookiest encounter any of them had experienced was Elise du Pont's episodes with a certain portrait of Caesar Rodney. The portrait, which hangs in the dining room, would periodically change position.
But other than that, the family had never seen or heard any of the three (or more) ghosts of Woodburn; therefore, there was a whimsical and slightly skeptical air about the group of ghost-hunters as they settled in for the night.
The governor placed a wine glass full of sherry on the landing of the staircase to entice the "tippling ghost," a spirit of Woodburn who was known to enjoy taking a good drink from some of the previous owners' wine cellars. With that, the du Ponts and the Woods bid one another good night and headed for their separate bedrooms in the three-story brick mansion.
It was then that strange things began to happen. Prior to settling down to sleep, Mrs. Wood left her gray poodle alone in a second-floor bedroom, closing the door behind her. When she returned to the room, the dog was gone. How could a dog have figured his way out of a closed room?
The poodle, wearing a leash and collar with clanging metal tags, was finally found in the basement. Not a soul had heard the dog leave the room, or seen him scurry down the two flights of stairs to the dark cellar.
Meanwhile, three stories above, one of the party opened the door to a third-floor bedroom and found

This review is from: Haunted Delaware: Delightfully Dreadful Legends of the First State (Paperback)
If you're in the mood for a good shiver, read this one alone at night! The author, a 16-year-old prodigy, has a flair for dramatic imagery. Most adults would be proud to "set the stage" the way she does! She also has a wonderful way of taking historical facts and adding (in italics) her own imaginative details. In sum, Haunted Delaware is the most entertaining book of ghost stories that I have ever read. I hope Ms. Woods writes another book soon!

This is a very artfully written, good book! Even thought I live in Delaware, this book would be entertaining even for someone who lives in another state. I read it in one day and I enjoyed the whole thing. I hope Ms. Woods writes a sequel.
