4.0 out of 5 stars What is the Secret of Senandaga Fort?, October 1, 2006
This review is from: The Haunted Fort (Hardy Boys, Book 44) (Hardcover)
This book is the 44th book in the original Hardy Boys series. This book follows "The Mystery of the Aztec Warrior." The next book in the series is "The Mystery of the Spiral Bridge."

The Hardy Boys travel to the Millwood Art School to solve the theft of two paintings from the Prisoner-Painter collection of millionaire Jefferson Davenport. The paintings are of nearby Fort Senandaga, where the Prisoner-Painter was held for some time.

Crumbling fort Senandaga is the source of several mysteries. A historical mystery is the source of contention between two of the characters in this story. There is also the mystery of a valuable chain of gold created by a commander of the fort. Is the chain a myth, or is it real? If it was real, does it remain hidden near the fort? There seem to be those who believe that the chain is real, for someone continues to steal Prisoner-Painter paintings and their frames, attacking those that stand in their way.

During their investigation, Chet Morton, Frank and Joe Hardy encounter a lake monster, a ghost floating over the water, saboteurs of various ilks, secret tunnels, and much more. This story has a good amount of action, surprises and mystery.

This book seemed to be much better than the previous two books in this series. There was a good sense of adventure and the boys met with real danger several times. Indeed, many of the characters in this story were attacked. In one case, Chet's car rolled down a steep hill in a foul trick that could have killed all three boys. The action was spaced nicely and there was a good mystery. I would recommend this book to a first time Hardy Boys reader. Fans of the Hardy Boys series will find this book to be of quality similar to the first books in the series.

The publisher recommends the Hardy Boys series for ages 8 to 12 because the series is relatively tame for the previous target audience of ages 10 to 14. This particular book is a very good fit for the new age range. Though the Hardy Boys series contains archaic information, as reading material for an increasingly younger audience they are fine. Once a child has reached age 12 or so the stories may be of less interest, but given the combination of mystery and action, these books remain good safe choices for parents who want to know what their children are reading.

... The cover art was Rudi Nappi's best or 2nd best in my opinion, perhaps only surpassed by the 1962 revision of The Secret of The Old Mill. The dark clouds, the ghost, the fort, and the brothers make this one of my favorite cover arts in the original series. The story however - yes - does not live up to the beautiful cover. Still I find this book gets a bum rap for that very thing. It is like the cover cursed the book. There is a rather good subplot dealing with Chet & artwork. The volume is rather violent in nature or one might say dangerous. Knocked out - locked in a sinking drum in the middle of a lake, a sea monster - this volume is packed with action. The criminals are not revealed until the end - a feature I liked. The manner of their capture was well written. The main plot though was a little on the "dumb" side. All & all, I felt it was a pretty good addition to the series. RATED C+

5.0 out of 5 stars Old forts, a mystery, villains and the like, June 19, 2011
This review is from: The Haunted Fort (Hardy Boys, Book 44) (Hardcover)
Sneaking around, discovering what other teens or adults were up to, solving crimes, ahh, I loved this series.
I read the entire series as a kid, and loved it. It chronicles two brothers and their friends adventures as they solve mysteries of all imaginable kinds. I only learned as an adult that Franklin W Dixon was a pen name used by several different authors, but the series had some great stories. I still enjoy a good mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardy Boys Greatest Hit!, January 22, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Haunted Fort (Hardy Boys, Book 44) (Hardcover)
The Hardy boys encounter a lot of mysteries during their lifetime. They often help their father, Fenton Hardy with many of his cases. His mother Laura HArdy and their Aunt Gertude always worry about Frank and Joe's cases. Frank, eighteen has dark brown hair and is one year older than the blonde headed Joe hardy who is seventeen.
In this mystery they all called upon by their chum Chet Morton to go to his uncles art studio to find out about some mysterious happenings at a French fort. While they are there they are asked to find out about hidden treasure and have to look all over to find some clues to the hidden treasure. Will they find it before a gang does? You won't know until you read the book!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, September 17, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Haunted Fort (Hardy Boys, Book 44) (Hardcover)
The Haunted Fort book was great. it was about Frank,Joe,Chet and Chet's Uncle Jim. There has been some stolen paintings at the art school where Jim works. It is run by a rich and wealthy man named Mr. Davenport. There's a guy who is trying to stop the Hardy's and Chet from going but fail. That's all I can tell you without given it away.
Here are the reasons why I think this book is good. One reason is because i've always liked the Hardy Boys books. Another reason is because there's always a good mystery. The Haunted Fort was a good book that was hard to put down.

There are a few reasons why I didn't like this book. One is because in some parts it just wasn't that good. Although in other parts it was real good. It doesn't matter either way it was a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Live Up To Its Title, May 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Haunted Fort (Hardy Boys, Book 44) (Hardcover)
Frank, Joe and Chet are called upon by Chet's uncle, an instructor at Millwood Art School, to find two valuable oil paintings stolen from the collection of the school's sponsor, Jefferson Davenport. The paintings, of nearby Fort Senandaga, were painted by an ancestor of Davenport's and one of the paintings in the series is supposed to contain a clue to the hiding place of a valuable chain of gold. The book was average, it had an okay plot and a moderate amount of action. I expected better from the interesting sounding title, but it wasn't bad. I recommend reading it, but I don't think that too many fans will get very excited over it.
