Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 UpSherry Norfolk combines well-seasoned storytelling skills and a pleasant singing voice in six love stories. These multicultural tales cleverly present love in all its complexities. Protagonists run the gamut from a lonely shepherdess who sings of undemanding love but whose vengeful requests cost her the man in her life (Song of the Shepherdess) to a Korean wife who confronts a tiger so she can help her war-wearied husband (The Tigers Whiskers). Revenge tells about a samurai warrior driven mad by the ghost of the wife he murdered. There is a charming tale of a lovely young woman who foils the devil and finds true love (Very Pretty Lady). In the Haitian myth of a young girl and a magical fish (Tezin), the girl becomes a mermaid and a trio of suitors who claim ownership of a young woman have the tables turned on them by an unsuspected rival. Norfolk tells the tales with fluid, uncomplicated language, occasionally adding appropriate simple songs. Hammer dulcimer music provides brief breaks between stories. These stories could be re-created as short skits or compared and contrasted with love stories in literature. The plastic case is lightweight and may require replacement for circulation. A biography of the performer and the sources for the stories are included. Public libraries may wish to place this cassette in the young adult section, and middle school and high school libraries may find teachers their best audience for this recording.Barbara S.
