Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A gorgeous psychic and a skeptical small-town sheriff overcome their initial dislike and fall in love in this uninspired offering from veteran romance writer Graham (aka Shannon Drake). Sheriff Matt Stone doesn't believe in ghosts and scorns anyone who does. But after several people flee his historic mansion, claiming to have seen a menacing spirit, Matt calls in Harrison Investigations. From the moment he lays eyes on psychic Darcy Tremayne, a former make-up model turned paranormal investigator, he treats her like dirt; indeed, Matt's redeeming qualities are few. Nevertheless, Darcy doesn't let his hostility disrupt her investigation or her burgeoning attraction to him. Despite the overblown imagery Graham (Night Heat; The Awakening) uses when Darcy and Matt are together ("the energy within her [was] a lightning storm that catapulted around him"), their intimacy feels contrived and superficial, largely because the protagonists themselves are one-dimensional. It's never clear how or why Darcy can sense things about people and ghosts; she just can-when it's convenient. Graham uses italics for Darcy's ghostly visions as well as for characters' thoughts, which may confuse some readers. Most, however, will be simply baffled by this established author's substandard effort.

From Booklist

Darcy Tremayne became psychic after her best friend, Josh, was killed the night of their high-school prom. Working for his dad at Harrison Investigations, she goes to historic Melody House to investigate a ghost that so scared a bride on her wedding night she ran naked down the stairs screaming. The owner of the home, and sheriff of Stoneyville, Matt Stone, is not taken with the willowy, aristocratic-looking red-haired ghost buster to begin with because she resembles his ex-wife, but against his will, he finds himself thinking of her so much that he seems to be developing a paranormal connection that puts him near her every time she is in danger. The very prolific and best-selling Graham has crafted a fine paranormal romance with a strong mystery plot and a vibrant setting. Diana Tixier Herald

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today best selling author, Heather Graham was born somewhere in Europe and kidnapped by gypsies when she was a small child. She went on to join the Romanian circus as a trapeze artist and lion tamer. When the circus came to South Florida, she stayed, discovering that she preferred to be a shark and gator trainer.

Not really.

Heather is the child of Scottish and Irish immigrants who met and married in Chicago, and moved to South Florida, where she has spent her life. (She has, at least, been to the Russian circus in Moscow, where she wished she was one of the incredibly talented and coordinated trapeze artists.) She majored in theater arts at the University of South Florida. After a stint of several years in dinner theater, back-up vocals, and bartending, she stayed home after the birth of her third child and began to write. Her first book was with Dell, and since then, she has written over one hundred and fifty novels and novellas including category, suspense, historical romance, vampire fiction, time travel, occult, horror, and Christmas family fare.

She is pleased to have been published in approximately twenty-five languages, and has had over seventy-five million books in print. She has been honored with awards from Walden Books, B. Dalton, Georgia Romance Writers, Affaire de Coeur, Romantic Times, the Lifetime Achievement Award from RWA and more. Heather has also become the proud recipient of the Silver Bullet from Thriller Writers. Heather has had books selected for the Doubleday Book Club and the Literary Guild, and has been quoted, interviewed, or featured in such publications as The Nation, Redbook, Mystery Book Club, People and USA Today and appeared on many newscasts including Today, Entertainment Tonight and local television.

Heather loves travel and anything that has to do with the water, and is a certified scuba diver. She also loves ballroom dancing. Each year she hosts the Vampire Ball and Dinner theater at the RT convention raising money for the Pediatric Aids Society and in 2006 she hosted the first Writers for New Orleans Workshop to benefit the stricken Gulf region. She is also the founder of "The Slush Pile Players", presenting something that's almost like entertainment for various conferences and benefits. Married since high school graduation and the mother of five, her greatest love in life remains her family, but she also believes her career has been an incredible gift, and she is grateful every day to be doing something that she loves so very much for a living.

5.0 out of 5 stars It gets NO BETTER than this!, December 24, 2003

This review is from: Haunted (Mass Market Paperback)
As a senior in high school, Darcy Tremayne had been in a car wreck that killed her prom date, Josh. Josh had been her best friend for years. Most avoided him due to his "gift". But Darcy loved Josh like a brother. When Josh died, he passed his gift on to Darcy.

Matt Stone does not believe in ghosts. But too many were convinced his home, a historic Virginia estate that dated back to the Revolutionary War, was haunted. The strange happenings began to worsen. And whatever ghost haunted the Lee Room, had become physically harmful to the living. Matt finally agreed to let Harrison Investigations explore the house. But Darcy was more than he ever expected.

Darcy Tremayne worked for Josh's father, who owned Harrison Investigations. She had proven many "hauntings" were simply pranks and such. She warned Matt beforehand that often people do not like the skeletons she turned up. Once she got into the investigation though, Darcy realized this house was unlike anything she had dealt with before. The house held more than a simply mystery from the past or a ghost who did not know how to move on. This house held a lethal danger! Darcy must fight the living and the dead!

***** Outstanding! Author Heather Graham has done an excellent job in creating believable characters and setting them in a spine chilling setting. Do not begin reading this one until you have plenty of free time because you will NOT want to set it aside for even a brief period of time. Highly recommended! *****

4.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Read! Great For October Blues!!, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Haunted (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a fun paranormal romance with plenty of twists and turns, ghosts, and sizzeling chemistry between Matt and Darcy.

Secondary characters were important to this tale of a haunted historic landmark set in Virgina. Darcy speaks to ghost's and with help from a childhood friend who died early in life, attempts to set things right in order to give these tortured souls a chance to rest. What she is not expecting is falling for her rather reluctant host Matt who does not believe in ghosts or things that go bump in the night, nor does she expect to feel the fear that accompanies each encounter with the lady in white.

When things start happening and Darcy starts to experience rather dangerous accidents she wonders if the ghost is really human and why she poses such a threat. Matt wonders if he will be able to get over the fact that he is falling for a ghost buster and he fears for her safety.

This was a fast paced read. The only complaint that I have is that I didn't think Josh was used enough. He was a character that I would have like to have seen more often. Outside of that this was a good read that was entertaing and fun. If you like romance, ghosts, and suspense...then you will like this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Paranormal Time, September 26, 2006
This review is from: Haunted (Mass Market Paperback)
Haunted is the story of Darcy, a professional paranormal investigator, and Matt, the local sheriff and owner of an old mansion with many unexplained activities happening. Beginning with Darcy's initiation into the paranormal, the story covers the ground of what's really haunting the mysterious Lee Room in Melody House, Matt's ancestral home. This being a romance, the sparks fly soon and often between Darcy and Matt, even though he's an open skeptic and she senses the ghosts that live in his house.

The writing is good in this novel; Graham has obviously done her research in that she presents paranormal investigators realistically, even incorporating real tools of the trade. There are a myriad of characters, which at times seems confusing; a few are caricatures, but overall the dialogue is witty and engaging. The attraction between Dary and Matt is edgy and tense, but the romance side of it isn't as fully developed. But overall this book achieves its goal of being both creepy and sexy, and it's highly readable and entertaining. If you can look past the actions of a few characters, you'll enjoy this one.
