Book Description

Travel and Local Interest May 10, 1999
A guide to sixty-six spine-tingling tales of haunted homes, businesses and graveyards along America's "Mother Road."
It's no accident that Route 66 begins in Chicago- at Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Ave. It was started by adventurous souls who had already traveled this far west and began forging the haphazard trail even farther. They followed market routes, stagecoach routes and sometimes paths or trails that, patched together, made one continuous route. Paving the roads made it easier for the rest of us to follow, but they were the first. Many of their spirits are still there, waiting for you to visit.

From Chicago's Biograph Theater, we travel west through places like St. Charles, Missouri; Gutherie, Oklahoma and Jerome, Arizona. Ending up at The Georgian Hotel's Speakeasy Restaurant in Santa Monica, California.

We hope you will pack up your bags, grab this book and hit the road. Or if you prefer to be an armchair traveler, we still think you'll have an exciting trip along our haunted version of Route 66.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What could be better than a good ghost story or an eerie tale about our beloved Route 66?
How about sixty-six of them!
All you need to enjoy this book is a comfortable chair, an open mind, and maybe, just maybe, a nightlight. --Michael Wallis, author of Route 66: The Mother Road

Who would have thought that a Route 66 road trip could be so scary? This book is absolutely first rate and promises a bone- chilling vacation like no other you have taken before. I loved it! --Troy Taylor, author of Haunted Illinouis and President of the American Ghost Society

5.0 out of 5 stars A compendium and guidebook for true American ghost stories., February 4, 2000
This review is from: Haunted Highway: The Spirits of Route 66 (Travel and Local Interest) (Paperback)
Ellen Robson and Dianne Halicki have collaborated in Haunted Highway: The Spirits of Route 66 to present sixty-six true ghost stores occurring along or close by the fabled two-thousand mile transcontinental Highway 66. Best of all, each site for each story is open to the general public. The ghosts are as varied as the hotels, museums, restaurants, and showboat to which they are associated. Indeed, there are locals who maintain that some of the spirits still linger on this history highway. From poltergeists to specters, these stories capture the mystique of Route 66 with all of their attendant tragedy, romance, adventure, and love. Information is provided on each location cited including address, phone number, and hours/days of operation so that the readers can visit the sites and "ghost hunt" for themselves. Haunted Highway is highly recommended reading for students of metaphysics and the paranormal, as well as travelers making their way along Route 66.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book that ties the Spirt World and Route 66., July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Haunted Highway: The Spirits of Route 66 (Travel and Local Interest) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book that is very easy to read and has great continuity. While the writing is done in a matter of fact manner, you do dedect the feelings the writers have for their subject and each location. The writing is professional, tight and concise.

The pictures help to give the reader a great feel for the location being described. The maps and other graphics helps the reader feel like they are traveling down Route 66. The book itself is almost a map of Old 66.

The writing is very smooth and once you start to read about a haunted location you will not stop till you are finished. Each haunted location is described with information and facts that make you want to go see that location. The information also is factually presented so that the reader can use his/her deductive powers to make up their own minds as to the reality of the haunting.

This is a must have book for any Route 66 fan as well as any follower of the Spirit World.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a surprise, September 18, 2001
This review is from: Haunted Highway: The Spirits of Route 66 (Travel and Local Interest) (Paperback)
I read this book about a year ago and just logged on to order it for a friend. I was surprised to see "Jane's" review. I've traveled the open portions of Route 66 several times and in my opinion, the book delivers on everything it promises. You may not see a ghost and many of the haunted places are not right on the route. The authors tell you that. The point is Route 66 leads you there, just like it lead those spirits. I think Jane missed the spirit of the book as well as the Spooklight.
