From the Back Cover

For most of us, most of the time, the roads we travel are largely forgotten once we get to where we’re going. By day, they usually reveal a familiar, real—living—world. But then darkness comes. Haunted Highways brings together more than twenty of the spookiest stories ever of ghosts, hauntings, and supernatural events on or near the highways and byways of America and beyond. Whether about vanishing hitchhikers, “street walkers,” phantom travelers, or lost souls, each one will bring delightful fright to readers young and old. Shiver as you read about:

• The phantom nun who, for more than a year, ominously predicted the imminent eruption of Mount St.
Helens
• Hawaii’s Night Marcher warriors and the fire goddess Madame Pele, who is still on the prowl for
companions . . .
• The spectral horse-drawn funeral carriage of a South Carolina coastal resort
• The actor Telly Savalas’s encounter with a long-dead good Samaritan on a rural Long Island road
• The Ghost Riders in the Sky who appear over the plains of Texas

Haunted highways follows ghostly tales situated on strips of road way or streets rather than a haunted house, the classic is the `phantom hitchhiker' who is picked up late at night by a good Samaritan but who disappears before he can take her home and while Ogden does cover this he finds far more such tales.

The cover of the book says the tales are `retold' by Tom Ogden and in the introduction he admits some of the tales have been altered for dramatic purpose. Those words filled me with more dread than any spook. I was afraid I'd bought the worst sort of drivel but as I read on I was wonderfully surprised. All too often books on ghosts and haunts are either so caught up in telling a good story that they start to drift away from fact or become so dry they are like reading the ingredients on a box of cereal. A handful of writers manage to walk the fine line between these two extremes and write a book that can be entertainingly creepy while still providing information. Happily Tom Ogden falls into this narrow strip and the result is a wonderful book of ghost stories that is creepy and informative.

Each chapter is a different haunting and has two parts. The first part are the conditions that led to the haunting- a jilted girl walking down a dark road a woman murders her children etc and then in the second part a modern traveler encounters the ghost. I suspect these are the parts altered. These give a bit of a chill. The nice thing is the appendix at the back of the book provides historical facts as they are known when they may be at odds with the truth in a good story. For example in the most famous phantom hitchhiker case, Resurrection Mary, she is said to appear in the same white ball gown she was buried in, in Resurrection cemetery.

Once you start it, you can't put it down. I took it to the beauty shop with me and the doctor's office. It's perfect, because the chapters are just the right length when you are waiting...and the time goes so fast and so entertaining and so spooky!!!

I work the graveyard shift. Right now it's 2am on Halloween morning. I brought this book with me to read tonight at work, accompanied by some spooky music. Anyhow, I was quite a bit disappointed to discover that the stories are written in short story form. I was expecting first hand accounts, told as such. And to make it even less appealing (to me) is that in the introduction the author states "in some cases I've taken the account and fictionalize the story" for "dramatic purposes." That's fine if that's what you're looking for, but I was looking for true accounts told by those who had the experiences.

A rare book to find, filled with modern campfire tales of ghostly encounters written in a colorful way; I especially loved the short story about the Night Marches in Hawaii that as a tourist we were warned about in case my family and I were in the jungle at night. I recommend this for anyone looking for some nice real ghost stories retold as fictional accounts to get the point across.

It is a good and interesting read, there are some stories that are just repeats and you will have probably heard of them before. It is broken down where each story is a chapter and most are not to long and if you want to skip one that is fine, there are some that take place in Hawaii and I did not find those that interesting so I skipped over them.
I was a little dissapointed that not all the storys actually stuck to The Highways which was what I was really hoping for so I will probably try the Haunted Truck Driver Story Novel. I do recommend this book, it is interesting but will not scare you that much. I also found myself researching in more detail some of the storys.

Some of it sounds as if the truckers popped too many little white pills for too long. I love a good ghost story, and tales of unexplained events, but some of these are just too farfetched.

I found the stories fascinating and was especially enjoyed the two chapters about Hawaii. Anyone who grows up in Hawaii knows those stories and most likely knows someone who claims to have heard the Night Marcher's drums or seen or picked up the elderly lady asking for a ride...
I enjoyed this book so much I looked for other books by Tom Ogden and just started reading Haunted Cemeteries.
