1.0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE, November 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love reading about Hollywood history. I have an entire bookcase of books relating to Hollywood history. The supernatural and "haunted" stories are my particular favorite, so when I purchased this book I was truly looking forward to reading it. Turned out to be a total waste of time and money. It's poorly written, sloppy, amateurish, disorganized and not in a good way mystifying - the writer keeps plopping in redundant Marilyn Monroe info no matter the chapter for no logical reason. There are typos, grammatical mistakes and unbelievably, complete paragraphs are repeated verbatim - page 132 is pretty much a repeat of page 131. It's as if the writer was asleep at the wheel when he was "copying" and "pasting" and never reviewed what he copied and where he pasted it. How this book ever made it past an editor is beyond me. The more "in depth" parts, on Thelma Todd and Valentino for example, read like a seventh grader's book report. A seventh grader who watched an E! special on Haunted Hollywood and wrote the report from that. Wikipedia's coverage is a more thorough and enjoyable read. Reading the snoozefest chapter about studio security guards hearing noises literally put me to sleep. There are parts of the book that don't even refer to Hollywood, it's as if the writer is trying to drum up interest for his other books. There's an entire chapter dedicated to listing where celebrities are buried. A list pulled right off the internet - and it looks like it was pulled right off the internet. Seriously, a chapter of lists - what a thrill it was to read that chapter. Even a high school senior would have known to stick lists in an appendix. This is the first time in my history of reading books (and I'm no spring chicken) that I felt like my time and money were completely wasted. So much so, instead of donating the book to my local library, a book fair or our town's book exchange like I usually do, I fed the book to our wood stove.
