Twenty-five scary stays where ghosts check in,but don’t check out

Hotels all over the world are said to have resident spirits. While owners may debate the wisdom of acknowledging spooky tales, guests continue to run into the apparitions. Haunted Hotels brings together twenty-five tales of ghosts, hauntings, and other paranormal happenings purported to have taken place on or around hotels, inns, and rooming houses across America and around the world, including:

• The Phantom in the Del: Was it suicide that killed Kate Morgan at San Diego’s famed Hotel del Coronado in 1892? And was that really her name? She’s been gliding down the hotel’s hallways for decades, and spectral phenomena continue to plague the room where she stayed.

• The Hellfire Horror: Two centuries ago, a prank pulled on a naïve barmaid led to tragedy in a cave used by the Hellfire Club in England. Her phantom has returned to the George and Dragon Inn, where she awaits the arrival of the mysterious lover she had hoped to meet the night of her doom.

Tom Ogden has produced good ghost books in the past, unfortunately this ain't one of them.

Each chapter follows the theme of a particular hotel with a reputation for being haunted. It is laid out with an introduction of a modern person checking into the hotel in question, then a part on the hotel's history, a ghostly experience by the modern person then a summation of other haunting in the building. Ogden writes well and it's an easy read. The problem is it isn't terribly scary, despite the copy on the cover talking about ghoulish guests and creepy caretakers, and far more seriously it isn't particularly new.

I can understand Ogden feeling he has to hit the most famous ones, but that is all he hits. Working from west to east the book seem to only cover the famous hotels, among them California's, the Roosevelt, Biltmore, the Coronado and Queen Mary, Colorado's Stanley, Nevada's now defunct MGM Grand, Louisiana's Myrtles and so on. I will admit a few chapters were new to me but far too many were well known to lovers of haunted history being almost the standard foundation for such stories.

The other issue I had was that for the most part the stories weren't in the least creepy. The telling seemed almost common place. Since such books are usually read for the vicarious chill, I found this really lacking.

In the end Ogden writes well and if you are just developing an interest in haunting then this is a very good book for you. BUT if you have a good knowledge of hauntings and ghost stories, then pass this by, you'll find little new here and probably be disappointed by what you do find.

I really like the way Tom Ogden has written his view of these places. I read a section every night, just to put a little chill in my bones. I have about 5-6 of his books and love everyone. The thing that I was disappointed in was the time it took for Amazon to get the book to me...it was ridiculously long.

My husband loves books about ghosts. In fact, he devours them. The more the better. He loved this one. Yes.
