Book Description

BEYOND AFRAID...

It was an experiment in fear.

Eight people, each chosen because they lived through a terrifying experience. Survivors. They don't scare easily. They know how to fight back.

BEYOND TRAPPED...

Each is paid a million dollars to spend one night in a house. The old Butler House, where those grisly murders occurred so many years ago. A house that is supposedly haunted.

BEYOND ENDURANCE...

They can take whatever they want with them. Religious items. Survival gear. Weapons. All they need to do is last the night.

But there is something evil in this house. Something very evil, and very real. And when the dying starts, it comes with horrifying violence and brutal finality.

There are much scarier things than ghosts.

Things that will kill you slowly and delight in your screams.

Things that won't let you get out alive.

HAUNTED HOUSE

People are dying to leave.

Jack Kilborn, author of AFRAID, TRAPPED, and ENDURANCE, brings back some favorite characters from those earlier novels and puts them through his own unique brand of hell. One that hurts real bad. One that will scare you to death.

Are you brave enough?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Jack Kilborn is the horror pen name for author J.A. Konrath. The Konrath/Kilborn Collective includes six novels. The sixth, Haunted House, stars characters from each of the five previous novels. These novels, in order, are:

THE LIST
ORIGIN
AFRAID
TRAPPED
ENDURANCE
HAUNTED HOUSE

From the Inside Flap

HAUNTED HOUSE can be read and enjoyed without any previous knowledge of Konrath's work. But it does feature characters from his novels AFRAID, TRAPPED, ENDURANCE, THE LIST, and ORIGIN, so fans of those novels will see some familiar faces.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pruff Reeder Kneaded May 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have bought, read, and mostly enjoyed, the majority of the Kilborn/Konrath catalog. Just saying that up front so you don't think I'm some kind of hater. :)

In my opinion, the story was pretty mediocre. As another reviewer mentioned, it really is just an R-rated Scooby-Doo episode. But...I have to admit, the ending, though over-the-top silly, was kinda fun.

When I first got my Kindle a year ago, it bugged me to no end the huge number of free or .99 books that were chock full of spelling and punctuation errors. As time went by I came to understand that many of these were first time, self-published authors, so I grumbled a little and let it go. It still bugs me, because I can't imagine working so hard on something you can be proud of and not respecting it or the reader. But...pffft...whatever...

However...Mr. Kilrath, there is no excuse for this sloppy mess. What...did you speak it into Dragon Dictation and just hit print? When people are paying full price for your books, I find it very disrespectful that no one thought to look it over before release. Please fix and send out a patch.

if u want me two by eneemore of yur buuks, yu knead too fix and patch Kindul vershun A.S.P.A.! (Kan yu sea how komplakated it is two reed wurds like theez)?

Update - 6/20/13
Bumped from 2 stars to 3 due to Mr. Konrath responding to my comment and putting out a patch to resolve the numerous typos. Thank you sir, maybe now my wife will want to read it without having the urge to throw the Kindle across the room! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars "Terrifying.......Funhouse For Fans"............ May 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been a long time fan of author Jack Kilborn (J.A. Konrath), from "Cemetery Dance Magazine", where he was interviewed and one of his scary short stories were there....It made me look for all his individual horror novels, that were not mainstream yet, like "The List", "Origin" and "Serial Killers Uncut"...Back then they were very hard to find, but his books pulled me into a refreshing, original, terrifying, unimaginable new world of horror stories..This author's novels are for readers that love to be scared, gore, blood, dark humor, shock value and entertainment..

This novel is for KilBorn/Konrath's fans....It is the most humorous and scary fun to date..It has an almost realistic plot, scientific testing that is going on today, great background history and depiction paranormal phenomenon..It brings together some his previous characters from his novels and shows how they are still capable of functioning today.... This story had my heart racing and jumping out of my skin just from the knock on the door...This is a non-stop page turner that you can't put down because of so many twists and turns all the way to the shocking ending......

The main characters are all survivors of horrific, terrifying, traumatic bloody events and I recognized them immediately...These people needed to go into hiding after signing documents, government cover-ups, suffer with severe PTSD and all have guns beside their beds...At the same time across the world they will all receive a strange knock on their doors between 2:30 Am to 3:15 Am....

Government officials will offer them 1 million dollars with the promise of their lives returning to normal if they participate in an exciting "New Experiment" about "Fear"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fusion of characters! May 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read all of Kilborn's "novels of terrors", there was no way I was going to let this one slip by! How could you go wrong when you take a series of very likable characters--from un-connected stand-alone novels, and bring them all together for one night in a horridly rumored haunted house. I've heard references to Hill House, and various other popular novels, but this story--at least to me--is pure Kilborn (aka Konrath). He takes just the right about of horror, mixes in a dash of humor, adds some very likable characters, and viola! I'm anxiously awaiting---whatever---novel he choses to create next!

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish this book. May 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Haunted House" is my first experience with author Jack Kilborn's work. I'm sorry to say that it will likely be the last. I really hate to give a negative review, but I honestly can't remember reading a more poorly constructed story. Clearly my opinion differs from the majority, judging by the overwhelmingly good feedback from other readers. I had high hopes for this book seeing as it earned a 4.5 star rating, and I was excited at the prospect of discovering a new author, but this book just didn't work for me. I gave it a good chance, and made it 80% of the way through before I was just too bored and confused to continue reading. In many ways, it is basically a warmed-over retelling of the 1999 movie "The Haunting".
The writing failed to provoke any emotional response from me whatsoever. I felt no apprehension, fear, or concern for the wellbeing of any of the characters. It all felt really one-dimensional. I had a very hard time formulating a picture of the characters or their surroundings because the descriptions were so brief and flat. This book was unable to create the rich and vivid world with living, breathing characters that I like to get lost in when I'm reading a well-written novel. Overall, it felt like all that I knew about the characters was that they'd each been through some scary stuff in the past, and it had messed up their lives so much that almost every last one of them needed to run out and buy a gun in order to keep the villains at bay. To be fair, the characters were fleshed out a little more than that, but not enough to make me feel like I had a good picture of who they were, or whether I liked or disliked them.
Each of these traumatized souls end up together for a wild night at a notoriously haunted plantation house.

I don't think this is Jack Kilborn's best work, but it was pretty cool how he included so many characters from his previous novels. I'm a big fan!

Rip off of every classic haunted house novel without the talent or payoff. Gratuitous crap. Poor editing. Many misspellings and garbled passages that were not proofread. Read more
