Review

This woman's got the goods. Stardom awaits. --Billboard Magazine

This belle can belt and pen. Janita teems with vocal wattage and knows it. --The Village Voice

She not only writes beautifully powerful songs, but sings with such passion and conviction that it's hard to take your eyes off her. --UK Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars The great ones evolve. August 23, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Good artists are ones who set our expectations and then meet them. But the great ones do so and then dare to exceed them...and Janita has done just that. I'm a fan of Seasons Of Life, especially "More Than Fantasy" and her striking cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence." I've been anticipating this new album, and have now spent many days listening to Haunted since I downloaded it from Amazon upon its release.

With Haunted, Janita has offered what made her the evocative soul-singer she has always been, while also entering a whole new orbit for herself and her music. I think of U2's Achtung Baby as the follow up to Joshua Tree. I think of OK Computer as the follow up to The Bends. I think of many examples in The Beatles' evolution. These are artists who needed to grow, and were able to do so without gimmickry or false-ness. They were able to exceed those very expectations we had for them in the first place. She has dared to do that here...indeed, with Radiohead-like guitar textures and organic, luscious vocal arrangements. There is a whole new canvas for her music, and it's beautiful to listen to.

This is a fully realized Janita, with gorgeous production (including a full string orchestra supporting her) and of course, her always powerful and unmatched vocals soaring above. The depth of songwriting is also reflected in her singing, as it now sounds to me like she's singing about something she believes in to her core. Standout songs for me are "Do We Learn," "Last Chance to Run and Hide, " the title track, and perhaps the best Janita song of all..."Hopelessly Hopeful."

This is timeless, and it's powerful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Attractive Vocals February 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Janita's hauntingly attractive vocals dominate this cd and on that basis alone make it a new favorite in my collection. Her vocal range is both technically and stylistically impressive as she reveals a vulnerable yet resilient sensitivity that bespeaks a life that's been lived. But it's also lyrically powerful and musically diverse and independant. It has a feel slightly reminiscent of Fiona Apple's "Tidal" but much gentler.

It's impossible not to be mesmerized by the title cut, as well as Hopelessly Hopeful and House On Fragile Terrain.

I first discovered Janita on her 2005 release "Seasons Of Life", which I also recommend for its very different yet equally attractive vocals. "Seasons" is a breezy, sexy, smoothly jazzy cd but there's no mistaking Janita's soulful infusion of real feelings.

In my opinion, "Haunted" is well worth adding to your world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The REAL Janita, Revealed At Last!! August 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD
It is a rare occasion to witness an artist finding their true voice. Janita's new album HAUNTED is just such an occasion.

Janita has always had an impeccable and passionate singing voice, but something very special has finally occured with this batch of songs. The glossy exterior of the previous albums has been removed, revealing a deeply emotional person--fragile but confident, scared but fearless, a fully three-dimensional human being. "Martian" makes me feel simultaneously elated and nervous, "House On Fragile Terrain" makes me want to go get drunk in an undiscovered dive bar, and "Hopelessly Hopeful" crushes me each and every time.

I can hear a host of musical influences here that were never present before, including Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Aimee Mann, and Radiohead. Yet with all this change, she still retains a continuous thread from her previous work into these songs. The heart of a true soul singer beats on, and I can't wait to hear what's next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change or Die August 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD
An artist develops or fizzles doing the same old same old. This amazing album brings Janita's previous styles to new depth, passion, insight--all in that buttered silk voice of hers. Each time I play it I find new dimensions in it. It is one FANTASTIC piece of work! Really, you can say--haunting.
