A very interesting book on Nevada's haunts!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
I picked this book up at a ghost conference and got to meet the author as well. She is very nice, and extremely knowledgable on the ghosts and history of Nevada. Based on the the repeated negative reviews by one reader, Ms. Oberding has a jealous enemy with an ax to grind. I think this is a neat little book, and does it's best to give the reader a taste of this states ghostly hangouts. I would recommend it!

This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
This book is a fascinating look into haunted Nevada. The updated 2nd edition is now out. Janice Oberding has researched EXTREMELY thoroughly for this book. She is extremely knowledgeable about hauntings in Nevada. There are many, many photographs of ghostly Nevada sites-- all of them EXCELLENT. I look very forward to her upcoming book- Carson City's Ghosts. (...) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

A Book for Teenagers,
By Amanda Randolph (Minden, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
This little book has a promising title and it does tell of places reputed to be haunted. However, most, if not all, of the stories are told in other volumes and in better depth. The author only briefly mentions some haunted places that could have been better researched. She tends to throw out little "teasers" and leaves the reader wanting to know more information than is given. As a student of the paranormal, I was disappointed in the quality of several of the photos. One would expect them to be a little more clear. She included some in the back that are purported to be "ghosts" They are very blurry and one cannot see much. I tried to see the "ghosts" she was saying are in the photographs but to be honest, I couldn't. This booklet may find an audience in teenagers.

a supernatural dissapointment,

This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
"Haunted Nevada" documents ghost sites in the Silver State. Most entries are a page or two long. Most write-ups are accompanied by photographs taken by the author's spouse. The primary emphasis is on upstate. I found "Haunted Nevada" to be unsatisfying. I thought this would be an entertaining book of scary stories that take place in the desert. Instead, this is a compendium of supernatural sites. The production quality is mediocre. First, the writing is weak. Janice Oberding often writes with a factual tone, which tends to drain the scare factor. Despite this non-fictional tone, Oberding doesn't maintain consistency and treat her subject with an objective lens. As a whole, the writing lacks the power and beauty of quality authors. Second, the page layouts and photography comprise the other element of mediocrity. The quality of the photos are such that anybody could have taken them. Indeed, it's not that the author hired a professional photographer, her husband took them. The printed photographs give the appearance that the selected method of publication was only intended for text and not images. (A factual error is that she writes that Boulder City is the only place in the State where gambling is prohibited. It is also illegal in Panaca.) Based on the reviews, it seems that this is one of those books that you either love or hate. As a similarly minded but more polished alternative, I suggest "Weird Las Vegas and Nevada: Your Alternative Travel Guide to Sin City and the Silver State."

Gripping and entertaining,
By Margaret Holland (Rapid City, South Dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
This author has a way of telling a ghost story that makes you carefully read each gripping page of this book cover to cover. I couldn't put this one down! Janice Oberding is an expert writer and story teller. This book is very well written and I would highly recommend it to everyone, you won't be sorry you bought it. Even if you don't believe in ghosts this book is very entertaining and rich in Nevada history, it keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next exciting ghostly tale.

A ghost passport to the Silver State,
By Richard Senate (Ventura, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
Janice Oberding's book "Haunted Nevada" is an easy to use and easy to read guide to the ghosts and haunted places in the State of Nevada. Well reseached, Ms. Oberding has a nack with a good ghost story. I liked her intimate look at Virginia City, a place I know and love well. Her book is a must for anyone interested in the Haunted Heritage of the American West. The Book is well illustrated with black & white photographs taken my Bill Oberding. As an author of several books on ghosts myself, I know well the subject and how hard it is to write about haunted places. I recomend it! (...)

Not a Good Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Haunted Nevada (Paperback)
This book is a waste of money and I can't see anyone spending this kind of money on such a poorly written book, with such terrible photography. I read it after someone else bought it. I read their copy. Boy was he ticked to have bought a pig in a poke! He said he won't buy anything else by this author.
