About the Author

Chris Woodyard began writing supernatural stories early in life. Her first book, which she illustrated and dictated to her mother in first grade, was about a witch. She went on to write the popular 7-volume Haunted Ohio series. She says that seeing ghosts runs in the family and that when she sees them they look very real and alive. However she is also afraid of ghosts and lives in an UN-haunted house near Dayton, Ohio.

Chris is back and in this edition, she includes stories from the "Dead Zones" (counties that she had never had stories from). Again, as with the others, the writing is clear and concise and she keeps us on the edge of our seats. Another winner. Unfortunately, I think since she has now hit all 88 counties, this is the last one. She had stated volume IV would be her last but when she received information about Shelby, Union and Van Wert counties, she said she just had to do another.

By the way, I contributed my own haunting to this edition and my autographed copy proudly sits on my bookshelf.

Haunted Ohio V tells some of the best Haunted Ohio stories to date. There are many gruesome and violent stories drawn directly from Ohio's history: The siege of Ft. Meigs and Dudley's Massacre. The Ashtabula Bridge Disaster. The "Black Death" cholera epidemic which led to patients sometimes being buried alive. The story of a real "Hatchetman" serial killer. The horrible story of the Native Americans slaughtered at Gnadenhutten.
The author is at her best when telling what she experiences when visiting a haunted place. I especially liked the story about her visit to a former strip club in Toledo where one ghost looked like Peggy Lipton of Mod Squad and another was so real she said, "excuse me" as she brushed past him. Also the story about the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield where a friendly projectionist ghost told her his name. The current staff didn't recognize the name, but it was later verified as having been the name of a real projectionist from the theatre up the street who apparently came to the Renaissance when his projectors were moved.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the author is using the "we report you decide" technique when she is too polite to say she really doesn't believe someone's story as in the section on EVP at Snow Hill Country Club or an interview with an alleged witness about gargoyle-like creatures at a possible Underground Railroad stop, Prospect Place.
There are plenty of ghosts and chills in this book, and a lot of Ohio's creepiest history!

Having bought all 5 volumes I have to say that this one misses the mark. Instead of a collection of ohio hauntings this reads more like "amatuer adventures in the paranormal". This book is a collections of Mrs. Woodyards travels to haunted sights and the psychic impressions she felt/received. I hate to say it but.......
Too much Woodyard and to little ghosts!
