Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here's a wonderful presentation of true ghost stories from every state in the nation. This isn't the first to use that format, but it arguably is the best. This book is informative, educational, fun and more than a little creepy." --Georgia Times Union

From the Back Cover

We're all familiar with the American spirit.
But what about America’s spirits? Here is an entertaining and informative guide to haunted places throughout the fifty states.
Usually, haunting is a private affair. The people whose homes are so afflicted generally do not want publicity, and frequently live in silence for years with their eerie secrets. Often, only family and close friends are aware that something unearthly shares the home of their loved ones; invitations to outsiders may be very rare indeed.
But many public places around the United States have their quota of haunts, and so must share them with their patrons. In Haunted Places in America, Charles A. Coulombe describes some fifty places accessible to the public, which are reputed to be haunted. These hotels, historic homes, restaurants, and outdoor locales are each covered in chilling detail.
Featured sites range from McCandless Hall in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Golden North Hotel in Skagway, Alaska, to Fairlawn Mansion in Superior, Wisconsin, and the Sheridan Inn in Wyoming.
You will also find out why it is believed that:
• Some guests never leave Alaska’s Golden Hotel.
• Colorado’s Stanley Hotel inspired Stephen King, but has ghosts of its own.
• The governor shares his mansion with the unearthly in Delaware.
• Florida’s Biltmore Hotel is still a refuge for one of Al Capone’s men.
• A serial killer’s victim haunts a church-turned-theater in Idaho.
• Antoine’s Restaurant in Louisiana sometimes offers supernatural events à la carte.
•0 In Ohio, a priest haunts his church.
• In Vermont, a local socialite holds forth in her home—long after her death.
Whether you are planning a spine-tingling trip, or just psyching yourself up for Halloween, this haunted itinerary makes for an armchair journey worth taking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great if you're reading it for a history lesson..., April 19, 2009
This review is from: Haunted Places in America: A Guide to Spooked and Spooky Public Places in the United States (Paperback)
This book was a complete disappointment. Every story begins with a long, involved history lesson (think pages and pages), and then the last few paragraphs talk about the haunting. It's as if the author decided to write a history book, and maybe throw in a few tidbits about ghosts here and there. What a letdown. I love history, but I didn't buy this book for a history lesson. I wanted ghost stories! My suggestion is if you're looking for a book that focuses on hauntings and the paranormal, pass on this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historic Places In America?, July 12, 2010
This review is from: Haunted Places in America: A Guide to Spooked and Spooky Public Places in the United States (Paperback)
I'm not sure what the author was going for but this is more of a history lesson than a book on hauntings.

This review is from: Haunted Places in America: A Guide to Spooked and Spooky Public Places in the United States (Paperback)
OK as a Paranormal group you might think about buying all kinds of books to help with learning how to and where to investigate, this book is good but not one of my top rated books to buy. As for the seller of the book, you can't get any better, all the sellers I have bought books from have delivered great condition books at a great price. Back to the books, it does give locations but with it comes a story that will or will not help if you go to the locations talked about, over all it is worth buying but don't pass up a how to book to buy this one.
