3.0 out of 5 stars A foot in the doorway of the weird.
Overall, this is a great way to get started on your search for the haunts of ghouls and ghosts; Mr. Hauck gives more than enough locations and write-ups to get a newly interested monster-hunter on his way. The book, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg, offering only the 'mainstream' haunted places, and often, I've found that he has gotten several of the legends...

I received Mr. Haucks book from my husband after he conducted an interview with him for a radio show in Chicago IL.1996. Since that time we have Lived in MA., MI., GA., and currently NY. We have traveled by car to and from these states often. It has been interesting to read about the haunted sights listed. We visited many of them along our way for entertainment. I am not an expert on the subject of the paranormal but I do enjoy reading about sightings, area legends and superstitions. Thanks to Mr. Haucks book we have taken time out in areas of the country that we never would have visited other wise. I read the review or rather comment made by Dr. Myers about Mr. Haucks reported hauntings. I can only offer this story in response. My husband and I visited Graceland Cemetary in Chicago and saw the statue of Inez Clarke under glass on our first visit. Upon the second visit some weeks later (after a rain)the statue was not there. Do I believe she was walking around? or just out for repairs? I can't say but it did make our visit all the more interesting and we never would have noticed if we hadn't looked in the book. Nowasa NY,NY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Compelling True Ghost Stories ... ..., April 21, 2004
By
This review is from: Haunted Places: The National Directory: Ghostly Abodes, Sacred Sites, UFO Landings and Other Supernatural Locations (Mass Market Paperback)
Haunted Places, The National Directory is one of those books that once you get started reading is difficult to put down.
For example, do not read the section about Tennessee's Bell Witch alone late in the evening unless you don't have to be at work early the next day. These stories contained in this book
are genuinely creepy and will keep you awake late into the night. Better than coffee. This book is everything a good true
ghost story book should be. Enjoy.

Overall, this is a great way to get started on your search for the haunts of ghouls and ghosts; Mr. Hauck gives more than enough locations and write-ups to get a newly interested monster-hunter on his way. The book, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg, offering only the 'mainstream' haunted places, and often, I've found that he has gotten several of the legends wrong - I do realize that this may be due, in part, to those I've spoken with, but locals generally know better. I do reccomend this collection to the serious individual, because it does lead to many 'secret spots' and local places of the weird. Most of the time, you can start off looking for one place, and the people around it will say 'well, that place might be haunted, but such and such a place is ten times worse.' So pick this up and you're on the way!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of places; very little info, December 17, 2006

This review is from: Haunted Places: The National Directory: Ghostly Abodes, Sacred Sites, UFO Landings and Other Supernatural Locations (Mass Market Paperback)
This isn't a bad book at all. I just had a different idea of what it would include. If you are truly looking for a directory of places all across the country and you plan to do some traveling, this is your book. However, if you're like me and plan to do more reading than traveling, this isn't the book for you. It really, truly is a directory. Think phone book...it has the location names, addresses and a few sentences on the locations' haunted activity. If that's what you're looking for, buy this book. However, if you're looking for an enjoyable read - this one isn't it. Again, it really is a directory.

I found this book to be very helpful. I have always been interested in authentic hauntings, and often find myself looking for a local haunted house when I travel. This book tells you not just about the occurrences, but also where the lives of the spirtis began and ended, and why they have come back from the spirit world.

I liked the fact that it told you whether visitors and interviews were allowed. It was also helpful that the book told you on a scale of 1-5 the chances of encountering a spirit.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to visit haunted sites, or would rather sit home in the safety of their own beds and be chilled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where to Go and How to Get There..., April 26, 2001

Triad Ghost Hunters (http://triadghosthunters.homestead.com) - See all my reviews
Haunted Places: The National Directory, by Dennis William Hauck, is a treasure trove of not only reputedly haunted places, but of our country's history as well. Sorted alphabetically by state, then by city, it's easy to find a haunted place within driving distance. Directions are given to locations, and phone numbers when they're open to the public. If you plan on doing some traveling throughout the country, this book could be the difference between just another boring tourist trap and an exciting Ghost Hunt. Don't forget your camera!

5.0 out of 5 stars The BESTghost directory....., June 2, 2001
I am a ghost afficianado, with shelves full of books on the subject, but this one stands out. It covers SO MANY haunted sites! In my area alone there must have been 30 sites listed (which is more than the local authors could manage to gather), yet each listing seems legitimate, and checks out with the local fokelore. There are haunted cemeteries, houses, churches, schools, libraries, etc. I've actually had people tell me about having experienced strange things in some of the local sites BEFORE they even knew I had this book... imagine their shock when I showed them that the place in question is listed in the book!

Each listing doesn't necessarily have too many details, but just a short background and description of the phenomena... there are an amazing number of listings for every corner of the country, though! I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Informative, and Terrifying!!, May 17, 1999
By A Customer
What makes all this information better is that all the cases were true!!! I liked the fact that cases were reported from all fifty states, so you can bet you'll find a site near you. This book posed a variety of supernatural accounts, from ghosts and hauntings (my personal fave) to UFO sightings and sacred land. I can't reccommend this book highly enough!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the Paranormal traveler, January 12, 2000
This book is a great, more accurate than not accounting of haunted places, UFO sighting sites and other paranormal events. The listing is first by state, then by city, and gives addresses, directions and phone numbers! I travel a great deal and never travel without it!
