4.0 out of 5 stars Scooby & Halloween fun!, January 5, 2008
This review is from: The Haunted Pumpkins (Scooby-Doo! Picture Clue Book, No. 8) (Paperback)
Good for new readers who love Scooby. Kind of dopey plot though (of course tv show always ends "too neatly" for anyone who's not a kid- part of scooby's campy appeal).

Gift for 5 yr old. Read right through it in no time. Pictures as some the words is a fun idea for beginning readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for a very beginning reader, flash cards are not that great., November 10, 2010

This review is from: The Haunted Pumpkins (Scooby-Doo! Picture Clue Book, No. 8) (Paperback)
The flash cards at the end are pretty much worthless, except for they help you figure out exactly what word is in the picture. For example, is the picture a web, spider web, or cob web? The cards say web. However, the card is so thin that you can easily see the picture through it when using it as a flash card. That means your child is probably seeing the picture instead of the word. I tested this with my daughter. When I successfully found a way to make the flash card nearly impossible to see through, she had a much more difficult (and sometimes was unable to) give me the word that she was supposed to have learned.

Personally, I think it would all be way more effective if they just gave the word and picture inline. We want the child to associate the simple word with the picture. This technique works and I have seen kindergarten books doing this very well.

Still, my daughter loves Scooby Doo and these books totally help her get into reading, so I have to say it is good stuff. I would give it 4.5 stars for real, but I round it up because it is certainly better than four stars.

I think this series of books will really help motivate kids who enjoy Scooby Doo to read. My advice is to just not go too crazy with it. Let the child read what they can and fill in the rest, so they stay motivated.
