At first glance the photos are interesting. However, the level of focus or graininess does not make them more compelling or spooky. I would have preferred more about the location than about the authors feelings when he was there. It did not make me want to buy his books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, gothic scenery!, January 13, 2010
This review is from: The Haunted Realm 2010 Wall Calendar (Calendar)
I don't normally write reviews, but this calendar is absolutely breathtaking! It is completely in black and white and the photographs are almost grainy, giving them an ethereal quality. If you like haunting, gothic artwork you should enjoy this. Each month has at least one photograph and some months have another small photograph of something "haunting" like a gravestone or statuary or something.

Every month also either has a history of the place photographed or a poem or something. June contains a passage from The Sleeper by Edgar Allen Poe and September has a passage from Country Sentiment by Robert Graves for example. I highly recommend this!

January is a photograph of Alleuze Chateau in France
February is Rustephan Chateau, also in France
March is Poltalloch House in Scotland
April is Carrouges Chateau in France
May is Randan Chateau in France
June is Dermot and Grania's Bed in Ireland
July is Bolsolver Castle in England
August is Brittas House in Ireland
September is Das Neus Palais in Germany
October is Lanerrost Priory in England
November is "Old" Castle Hackett in Ireland
December is Schloss Wernigerode in Germany

I took forever picking a calendar out this year, and I am very happy with my decision in Haunted Realms. I wanted something unique, with black and white photography, and this was perfect.

Even though the subject matter is haunted places, I would say the overall feel is more enchanting than spooky.

I'm probably going to keep this calendar a long time after 2010, just for the pictures. It's really beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting and Ghostly Way to Pass Twelve Months, January 27, 2007

The Haunted Realm 2007 Calendar highlights the mysterious and other-worldly photography of Simon Marsden. His black-and-white photos capture scenes that are mysterious, somber and thought-provoking. Gothic architecture, gravestones, bare trees and gnarled branches, ominous skies, and foliage made un-earthlike by the use of infrared photography are the major elements that comprise his striking images. Additionally, each month provides a short explanation of what makes the photographed site "haunted". The calendar grid, itself, offers a clean layout and is easy to read, making the calendar as practical as it is beautiful. Highly recommended.

I bought this as a gift for someone and it is a really cool calender with lots of detail and story to each picture. If you are into that kind of stuff it is well worth the purchase.
