This review is from: The Haunted Doll's House (Penguin 60s) (Paperback)
This little book contains two short stories by M.R. James and one by R.L. Stevenson. All are ghost tales of one sort or another. James' stories are <The Haunted Dolls' House> and <The Rose Garden>. Stevenson's story is <The Body Snatcher>. All the tales could be called 'classics' written by 'master story-tellers.' The writing is not boring and certainly flows easily for the modern reader. This is not like reading Shakespeare. <The Haunted Dolls' House> is definetly the most interesting and original in its' details. The longest story is 26 pages so the book can be taken up when you have half an hour to an hour to spare. The book is pocket size so it is ideal for reading on a bus or train. I must warn the reader that these tales are not particularly horrifying or bloodthirsty, so if you are used to Stephen King or even scarier authors this book may be a disappointment to you. |
