I didn’t read the first book in the Peyton Clark series but this didn’t hinder my understanding or enjoyment. Ms. Mallory fills in the background in a way that feels natural and doesn’t intrude on current events. If you’re in the same boat here’s a quick look at the characters.

Peyton Clark ~ Peyton is a divorcee from Los Angeles. She moved to New Orleans to claim her inheritance, an Antebellum home in the Garden District. The house has a long history and like so much in New Orleans is haunted. Peyton is a breath of fresh air charming.

Ryan Kelly ~ Contractor, Southern hunk, and Peyton’s love interest. Ryan is renovating Peyton’s house and dipping his toe back in romantic waters after losing his wife several years ago. Ryan is movie star handsome and a big point in his favor, he’s alive.

Drake Montague ~ Former owner of Peyton’s home, Drake was a policeman who died in 1919. He’s haunted his home ever since. In order to save Drake, Peyton agreed to allow him to share her body. Roguish and flirty, Drake has my heart even if he is a spirit.

Lovie ~ Voodoo priestess. Lovie was instrumental in exorcising the malevolent spirit of a serial killer known as The Axeman from Peyton’s home. The experience has formed a strong bond between them. Lovie is a delight. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing a couple of Lovie’s.

Christopher ~ A warlock who assists Lovie. Christopher is arrogant, condescending, and annoying at the best of times. What a twit but he does have his uses.

Guarda ~ is a direct descendant of Marie Laveau. No matter how you look at Guarda she’s scary and doesn’t inspire a lot of trust.
Nor does she care what anyone thinks so…Not someone you’d want to meet any time, any where.

The second in this clever urban fantasy set in New Orleans, Peyton is continuing to renovate her new old home, after the surprising discoveries in the first story. Quick recap: Peyton is recently divorced, and inherited an old home in New Orleans. But aside from the physical building, a metaphysical element is adding layers of difficulty. The house was once the home of a police officer Drake, and he is still finding it difficult to let go and cross over, and a malevolent entity also is battling for control and supremacy.
I loved Peyton in the first book, she was confused and scared but determined to make it on her own. Her budding relationship with Ryan has given her some new friends and support, and while they both have issues that need some work, Ryan is certainly in Peyton’s corner. In this book, I felt Peyton was alternating between ‘independent’ and a touch of withholding, as if she doesn’t trust in Ryan enough to let him know just WHAT is happening. And plenty is happening: Drake, the entity who has been trying to protect Peyton, gained a modicum of redemption when Peyton allowed him to inhabit her body. Fortunately, she has learned how to keep Drake in the dark so her time with Ryan isn’t compromised: but the intrusion is one that she has not shared with Ryan, and it felt a bit deceptive to me.

Drake, for his part, is more than a little attracted to Peyton, and her to him. An irredeemable bad boy, Drake is unapologetically flirtatious and outspoken, not to mention his protective feelings for the house and Peyton. When the malevolent entity returns to wreak more havoc, Peyton again experiments with spirituality and some voodoo charms and spells to banish the bad and protect the here and now.

This series must be read in order. The first book is Ghouls Rush In (Peyton Clark Series Book 1). This is the second book.

Peyton and Ryan don't have the most normal relationship. First there is Drake... He is possessing Peyton (Ryan has NO clue) and then there is the fact his little sister set them up... Oh and of course the painful memories of how his wife died on one of his construction sites... It seems they may be destined for failure! Especially if Peyton doesn't tell Ryan about Drake possessing her very very soon! After all she did promise to never hide anything from him ever again. Just never seems the right time though to tell her new boyfriend that the ghost that used to haunt her house now resides within her body... And mind. What could go wrong next? Is the demonic Axeman truly gone? Or is he just free of her house? Will Ryan leave her when he finds out her secrets?

This was a great sequel that answers some of the questions that were left over from the last book while bringing to light new ones that should have been obvious but weren't! I loved it almost more than the first one :) Mallory's unique take on supernatural romantic mystery is refreshing and comedic at the same time! I can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!

***This series is suitable for adult mystery lovers who like plot driven sex scenes and paranormal elements :)

I think it's fairly safe to say I enjoyed this second book in the Peyton Clark series more than I did the first. Where Ghouls Rush In was a lukewarm beginning to the series, Once Haunted, Twice Shy is filled with twist and turns that kept me riveted.

Things are heating up for Peyton both in and out of bed. Wink-wink! Finally, Peyton and Ryan have moved their relationship into the steamy boyfriend/girlfriend venue. Of course there is that little problem that Peyton is possessed and Ryan doesn't know about it...YET! And oh yes, did they actually managed to get rid of the Axeman. The book is certainly filled with exciting drama. Some questions that were left unanswered from the previous book get answered. BUT, those answers just caused more questions which crank up the excitement level about 20 degrees. This there's a few extra players this time around so not only do we get to hang out with Lovie and Christopher, but we get to meet a very creepy Voodoo Hoodoo priestess, Guarda, and Baron Samedi. I'm not sure what he is but something tells me, we haven't seen the last of either of them.

I have to admit I wasn't quite certain of I wanted to continue reading this series. The first book was okay, the second much better so we seem to be on the right track. There is still quite a few unanswered questions floating in the air and oh yes, there is a cliffhanger. I know eventually the happy couple will be Peyton and Ryan but I still can't help but feel Drake isn't completely out of the race. So I will sit back twiddle my thumbs and wait for the next book to come out. As for my recommending this book and series, that would be a yes.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.
