I know I'm in the minority here, but I just couldn't get into this book and didn't really enjoy it. I kept waiting for it to get better. I had a problem with the Genie thing, I don't know why, I don't have a problem with any of the other paranormal beings. "The Haunting" is the perfect name for this edition of The Immortals series. It's spooky and thrillingly frightening at times, making it an excellent release for Halloween. Still, the romance takes the major role in the story. Terrific characters and a fast pace kept me reading. At just under 300 pages, this book packed tons of story.

Since helping to kill Kehksut, Mai (a wood nymph) has been suffering from frightening hallucinations brought on by PTSD. Worse, her powers have all but disappeared. Living with her nightmares has caused her to lose her job as a reporter. Finally, after months of therapy, Mai is determined to get her life back. She has information that can prove to be the news story of the year. A local politician has been involved in a spree of crimes including murder.

Before Mai can write the article, a man breaks into her apartment and beats her nearly to death... Or so she believes until minutes later she realizes that both she and her apartment are in perfect condition. Could it be that the hallucinations are back worse than ever? Or was the man truly there? The only thing missing from her apartment is the information she had for her article. Afraid for her life and sanity, Mai quickly moves to a new apartment building.

Nick is both a chameleon and a "Spirit Walker". As a chameleon, he can take the shape of just about any living thing. As a Spirit Walker, he can enter peoples dreams. He can also hunt for missing persons by following the path of their spirit. When a friend of Mai's disappears from her new apartment, Nick is called in to search for her.

Mai has no idea that the Spirit Walker is also the very man who has been loving her in her dreams. Even Nick is not aware that Mai is the dream lover he has shared the past few nights with. Feeling certain that the woman in the dream world is his one true spirit mate, Nick tries to resist the temptation of Mai. He is drawn to Mai, but does not want to be untrue to the lover he has come to cherish in the dream world.

Messages scrawled in the steam on her bathroom mirror, faces staring out at her from the living room mirror, voices calling her name, violent physical attacks that are instantly healed, horrifying creatures that appear in her hallway only to disappear just as suddenly... Horrifying hallucinations? Or is it all real? Mai fears no one will believe her. Who can she trust with her secrets? Anything that threatens Mai will have to face Nick's rage. No sacrifice is too great to keep her safe.

In the seventh book of the Immortals series, Robin T. Popp brings us the story of Mai and Nick, neither of whom is actually immortal. They are magical creatures, though. Mai is a wood nymph, which I gather means she can teleport and is extremely horny. Nick is a Spirit Walker who can travel through the spiritual realms of dreams, wishes, etc. He can also morph into any living thing bigger than a hawk. Mai is also a reporter working on exposing a corrupt politician who is not pleased about her digging into his campaign. Also, Mai's new apartment building boasts a creepy maintenance guy who happens to have a genie under his control (loosely, which is unfortunate for all of them. This is not a nice Robin-Williams-type genie.)
This is my so-far favorite of the immortals series. Mai and Nick are quite amusing characters with crackling chemistry. I enjoy the idea of a spirit mate, as well. Will, the super, is so creepy he's comical, and it's nice to get visits from Lexi and Darius from an earlier volume of this series.
Highly recommended. Would work almost as well as a standalone, so if you haven't read the whole series, don't worry, you won't be lost.

This book continues the series as if one author was doing it all. It continues to amaze me that these 3 women have written so well together. Great bedroom scenes and an intriguing plot with plenty of twists at the end. If you enjoy paranormals of every description with a love story to add spice, you will enjoy this whole series.

The Immortal series is a good read, each builds on the former but can be read independently. This is an excellent series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Haunting, January 12, 2009
This review is from: The Haunting (Immortals) (Mass Market Paperback)
The biggest thing I liked about this book was that Mai didn't come out unaffected by the events of The Gathering. She has her own demons to deal with. I like that. I thought it was a very good addition to the original series, and I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the second cycle and the anthology coming out.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a superb entry in the excellent Immortals romantic urban fantasy saga, October 21, 2008
This review is from: The Haunting (Immortals) (Mass Market Paperback)
Wood nymph reporter Mai Groves suffers from PTSD following her participation in a battle against a demon. However, the mental scars will heal as she well knows. What disturbs her more is the man she has fallen in love with whom she met on the spirit plane; the problem is she assumes he does not exist and just her imagination running wild with a dream lover.

Spirit walker Nick Blackhawk wonders who his lover he met on the spirit plane is on the mortal realm as he needs her in all aspects of his life. He is unaware that a reporter who insistently demands an interview is his beloved. Her editor warns her to watch herself when her therapist Dr. Barbour is murdered; she, as one of his thirty patients, is a suspect. When trouble arises in her apartment building with the disappearance of another tenant, Nick, aware now of who Mai is, vows to keep his soul mate safe.

This is a superb entry in the excellent Immortals romantic urban fantasy saga written by three authors (Robin T. Popp, Joy Nash and Jennifer Ashley). Mai is fabulous as an intrepid journalist still mentally healing while her world continues to collapse until her dream lover proves real on the mortal plane. The threat to her from unknown seemingly paranormal forces seems real as Ms. Popp returns to the Immortals (see IMMORTALS: THE DARKENING) with a wonderful addition.
