Humans 2, Rabbits 1,

Trap works great for catching rabbits.First night we put it out, we caught a large rabbit. Second night we saw a small rabbit walk inside the trap, eat all the bait, and walk right out again! Turns out that the trap was not sensitive enough to catch the smaller bunnies. But thanks to a review here, we found out that the trap's sensitivity is easily adjustable - the instructions are a bit opaque in this area. If you want to make the trap more sensitive to smaller animals, see the section of the instructions entitled "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods". The steps are very easy & quick. Would have given the trap 5 stars, but deducted 1 star for the poorly titled instructions. I don't design rabbit traps, what in the world is a trigger rod. "Correcting Over-Adjustment to the Trigger Rods" accurately describes WHAT you are doing, but a new inexperienced, maybe slightly dumb user like me with a problem to solve is looking for a section with a title that tells me that it contains the steps that will solve my problem. Sorry for the rant. After adjusting the trap, we caught the smaller bunny the next night. Highly recommend this trap.

Good choice for squirrels,

This review is from: Havahart 1030 Live Animal Two-Door Rabbit, Squirrel, Skunk, and Mink Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
I had a female squirrel chew through a gable vent and make a nest for herself (and babies) in our attic. This trap is a good choice for squirrels -- rat "snap" traps are too small. The model 1040 trap is a slightly better choice -- it has the same width and height, but is a little longer, making it less likely that the squirrel's "butt" will hold the door open.Keep the instruction sheet packed with the trap. It describes how to adjust the sensitivity of the pan. Trip it a few times yourself to make sure you are fully familiar with it. If squirrels still manage to steal the bait, try smearing peanut butter on the underside of the pan -- it's harder for the squirrels to steal it that way. Now, the part you DON'T want to know. You are not doing the squirrel any favors by relocating it. Many states (mine included) specifically ban relocating squirrels and other wild animals. At best you are giving your problem animal to some other homeowner. At worst, squirrels and other small mammals are territorial and will die if transported to unfamiliar territories where the current residents are unlikely to welcome them anyway. Also, all wild animals harbor diseases and parasites (fleas, ticks, bot flies, etc.) -- transport the animal and you spread local infections. The animal really does have to be humanely destroyed.

Know the trigger well,

The Havahart 1030 is a good trap for squirrels. Do not get one any smaller. The tail and butt will keep the doors from shutting if you do. At first I was frustrated that the bushy tail rats where eating and leaving because the arms where hard to set perfectly with the bait pan. If you set it to hard, the critters come and go. To light and it will trip with the wind. I tried rubber bands and twistys from bread loaves to hold peanuts to the pan(peanut butter gets to sloppy after a while)That didn't work. I found out by accident that the best way to bait this thing was to put the nuts (a few peanuts, cashews,or any nut will do) under the bait pan. Squirrels will keep nuzzling and rooting to get to them which flips the bait pan up instead of pressure down. This makes it much less sensitive to setting the arms perfectly with the bait pan. You still have to play with the arm settings to find a good spot. Once you get that down its a sure trap that holds up really well. Practice will get them every time. I have reduced the heard to almost zero.

I have used it twice to get a squirrel and rabbit, the meat was a little gamey but......just kidding. I was able to release the pests far from my home.

Two rabbits caught in 5 days...,

and all my plants are recovering nicely! This trap works as advertised and is saving my sanity. I tried everything to stop the damage including "Deer Off" to no avail. Within 2 days, I had one of the rodents and 3 days later another. The damage to my plants has ceased. It is amazing how much damage one rabbit can inflict. I have since purchased the chipmunk trap to capture the rodents stealing the bait from my rabbit trap (I want to make sure that no other rabbits move in). I caught my first within a day of setting it up. The traps seem to be pricey but are well constucted and should last a lifetime. When I started to add up the amount of damage being done, they will easily pay for themselves! Just make sure that you take the little critters to a park far, far away.

I bought this Havahart trap (model 1030) from Amazon over a year ago for the purpose of catching rabbits in my yard. However, all I've ever caught was squirrels, which I really can't complain about as they are also a problem. Though I haven't been able to observe it, I suspect this trap may be a little too small for many rabbits which makes them hesitant to enter or the door is not able to shut all the way allowing them to back out. This year, there are substantially less squirrels in my yard than last year because of using the trap.I've since purchased a model 1079 Havahart trap (much larger than this one) and caught a rabbit on the first day using that one. I baited the trap with a fresh carrot with the leaves attached and 3 slices of apple (1 slice near the front of the trap, 1 on the trip mechanism, and 1 in the back of the trap). The rabbit ate all 3 slices of apple but did not even touch the carrot. Anyway, if your intent is to catch rabbits, I recommend Havahart model 1079 over this trap (model 1030), and make sure to use apple slices as bait.

The original product as shipped by a merchant arrived defective with the spring mechanism mounted backwards. After calling the manufacturer and submitting a photo of the defect, the trap was replaced promptly and without further issues. While I heard that this trap works well, two weeks into the process, the critters (most likely squirrels) are still running around in the attic and avoid the trap (and Victor rat traps as well).

As of 3/24 this am I caught my fourth rabbit. The trap really works.I close one end of the trap and place homegrown lettuce the other side of the plate, so the rabbit has to step on the plate to get lettuce. Havahart 1030 24-by-7-by-7-Inch Two-Door Cage Trap for Rabbits Just be patient. you'll have to figure out how to set it with a hair trigger!

This small trap is just the ticket for snaring pesky skunks and polecats. It is easy to bait, set and the trap mechanism is mechanically fool-proof. The trap is very light and easy to handle. I very highly recommend this trap for those not intending a destructive trap.

Squirrel-free at last!,
This review is from: Havahart 1030 Live Animal Two-Door Rabbit, Squirrel, Skunk, and Mink Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
For years I put up with pesky squirrels. In the past year, our neighborhood has been overrun with them. They have littered the yard with peanut shells (a neighbor thinks it's cute to feed them!) and sharp broken pieces of walnut shells, dug holes all over the place, dug up and consumed more bulbs than I can count, tormented our two terriers, and stolen expensive birdseed. Then I discovered Havahart traps. These traps were the answer to my prayers! I first purchased the smallest size (18 inches long) and trapped five small, black squirrels in rapid succession. The larger grays, however, proved a bit trickier. They were long enough to raid the bait, yet keep the bulk of their bodies out of the trap. So when the trap was sprung, they simply backed out, taking their full tummies with them. I then graduated to the next larger size trap (24 inches) and had no trouble catching the bigger beggars. In three weeks' time, I was able to safely trap and relocate 18 squirrels (and still counting!) I do offer some advice on the perfect bait to use: peanut butter! I spread a glob of it on the bait plate, then press a small amount of peanut pieces and assorted birdseed into the peanut butter. The squirrels are able to steal the peanuts and seed very easily, moving in and out of the trap numerous times without tripping it. This causes them to lower their guard. But their greed ultimately gets them! When they come back for the peanut butter, their fear of the trap having been quelled, they must put pressure on the plate in order to lick off the peanut butter. And that's when they're caught! I then simply place the loaded trap into my vehicle, drive to a wooded location far from my neighborhood, and release them into their new home. The trap has worked perfectly, securely holding the vermin inside until they can be relocated. No damage has been caused to either trap by the frantic squirrels thrashing about inside. Except for one unfortunate fellow who must have caught a foot somewhere in the cage, there have been no injuries to the squirrels, and they generally calm down during the rider to their new location. Operation Relocation has been a huge success thanks to these traps! I highly recommend Havahart traps as a safe, humane and reliable method for reducing the squirrel population in your neighborhood. |
