5.0 out of 5 stars Catch a Ferrel Cat or two
We had three Ferrel Cats roaming under our outdoor shed. We tried everything to get rid of them and then this Havahart Trap was discovered. It works excellently! We caught one of the cats one day and the next had two in the same trap! No problem and I would recommend this to anyone trying to catch small animals to take to the shelter. This is easy to handle and I...

apparently mine were both...but we did get um eventually...the release could be a little more sensitive ours would go in eat and leave without triggering it...so we had to play with it a bit to make it trigger happy...

We caught one of the cats one day and the next had two in the same trap! No problem and I would recommend this to anyone trying to catch small animals to take to the shelter. This is easy to handle and I carried it to the shelter. The man there just opened the door and out walked the cat to another cage for putting into a better cage.

While I was there at the shelter others came in carrying these traps as well. They really are great!

This trap is the best for catching cats. The open ended design allows the cat to see completely through and not be deterred by a regular one door trap. A wary cay will likely not enter a trap where it can see a closed end.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Trap Works!, October 27, 2009

I bought this trap years ago and have never failed to catch the critter I set it out for (I'm guessing around 8). Put the food bait on the pressure plate inside and set the trap door at the very edge of the catch so that any pressure on the pressure plate will set it off. Once the door trips closed, there is no way an animal will get out.

I bought one for my Mom when she had a raccoon in her attic. It worked for her too. I admit; I set it up for her, but this is the point -- it has to be set up correctly. When you first use it, test how you set it up by pushing on the pressure plate with a rod. You will learn how to place the catch so that it goes off consistently. By the way, my brother-in-law has one. He lives in a rural area and he has caught many more animals than I have, including his own cat.

I can't believe anyone could give this trap a negative review. I wouldn't have bothered to post this but I have to set the record straight.

1.0 out of 5 stars 20 year old model is much better, August 29, 2008
This review is from: Havahart 1045 Live Animal Two-Door Raccoon, Stray Cat, Opossum, and Groundhog Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
I gave my old trap (20+ years) to one of my Sons and it is still working fine. However this new model was a mistake to buy. It arrived not fully assembled, and was awkward to figure out how fix it according to the instructions. Finally got it working, but the two-door operation is not at all practical, and does not function reliably. Stricktly a one door gadget. Finally Opening the door for release/removal of the animal (especially a skunk), is nowhere as easy as their old design. The old trap was easy to set up and use, and also safe/easy to remove/release animals as needed... Why can't these young engineers recognize and leave a good thing alone!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Trap not suited for trapping cats, May 7, 2008
This review is from: Havahart 1045 Live Animal Two-Door Raccoon, Stray Cat, Opossum, and Groundhog Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
I rescue feral cats--I trap, neuter & return. This trap has a design flaw. The trap is designed to be operated with both doors set, allowing the cat to enter from either door, and the trip plate is in the center of the trap. I was a little apprehenisive, given the location of the trip plate, so I decided to try it out on my own cats first who are relatively small --8 lbs. I placed food in the center of the trap as advised. When one cat tripped the plate with her front paw, the door slammed her tail between the door and wall! After my other cat ate the bait and tripped it with his rear paw, he got his head banged by the door! Hardly a humane trap! I'm here to resuce cats, not injure them in the process. Thank God he didn't get his nose broken. Not only that, the doors close way toooo forcibly--bang! Scared me (and my cats) half to death. I currently use tru-catch traps model 30LTD, whose trip plate is at the rear of the trap, which are very quiet and do not injure the cats under any circumstance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+++++, July 21, 2010
This review is from: Havahart 1045 Live Animal Two-Door Raccoon, Stray Cat, Opossum, and Groundhog Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
Had all kinds of critter problems in our Suburban gardens.
Have had this trap for two weeks and we have caught (and relocated)
two groundhogs, two raccoons and one opossum. I find the trap works better if
you set the trigger just enough to make it fast..and use something sticky
on your bait. I have been using cut pieces of apple with maple syrup on it to make
it stick to the trigger plate.
It is kind of fun to trap them and my three year old daughter loves to see what they look like, I tell her that they are our prisoners for the day and it is way better than shooting them which just always made me feel horrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Critters in 5 Days, August 2, 2008
This review is from: Havahart 1045 Live Animal Two-Door Raccoon, Stray Cat, Opossum, and Groundhog Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
The trap works wonderfully. I use it to catch the skunks and racoons that have been eating my chickens and pheasants. Raccoons are not native to my area and the local animal control will not do anything about them so it has been nice to have a tool that makes catching and exterminating the pests very simple. Putting a little tuna fish under the trip seems to work best. I tried eggs too, but found that the animals were smart enought to avoid the trip. Putting tuna fish or something else that has lots of smell under the trip seems to get one every time.

I'll probably buy another one of these next year if I have the cash. Wish they were about $20 cheaper, oh well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundhog bingo!, August 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Havahart 1045 Live Animal Two-Door Raccoon, Stray Cat, Opossum, and Groundhog Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
True story. About 3 weeks ago one of the young groundhogs living in the rock wall decided to dig a rent controlled borrow right under the foundation of our family room. I borrowed an older single door Havahart, baited it at various times with cantaloupe, parsley, green beans, corn muffin. I put it up against the hole, a few feet away, cloaked it, made a corral, no luck. I think she'd been in there but didn't trip the door. So I ordered this 2 door trap, set it out at around 11 this morning, and by 6 o'clock I had me a groundhog! Here's what I did - I set it right in front of her hole, blocked the sides with a makeshift fence of chicken wire and some firelogs (nothing fancy, took about 5 minutes), bated it with bits of corn muffin on both ends, on the trip lever, and underneath the trip lever. Then I cloaked the top and sides with a small tarp so it would look like a tunnel to her.
