I've been trapping for 50 years. Using Havahart for as long as I can remember. Had to get more traps recently and discovered the current models just are not as sturdy as the old ones. Model 1045 and 1050 both worked fine for opossum, feral cat, squirrels, rabbits and raccoons. Neither held a trapped armadillo, even though armadillo pictures are on the boxes and at...

The first time I caught a raccoon in this trap I suddenly understood why it was the best trap I could have bought. Unlike some of the off-brand traps that look the same, this one has solid sheet metal doors and a metal guard plate around the handle. When I bent down to pick up the trap I realized that if that guard plate were not there I could have been bitten through the bars. (Needless to say, even a perfectly healthily trapped raccoon is going to be in a very sour mood!) Same with the solid doors on the ends - if the doors had been made of the same mesh as the cage (as they are in some other brands) I would not have been able to release the raccoon without risking a good chomping.

This trap has already paid for itself in eggs that are no longer being stolen (along with the occasional hen) and it looks like it's going to give me many more years of dependable use. I'm glad I bought my own instead of borrowing one from Animal Control, because I'm able to keep it set in the chicken pen pretty much all the time this way. I've caught four raccoons and a possum in the two weeks since I bought it, and have safely relocated them all to an undeveloped area. (Be sure to check with Animal Control in your area to make sure this is legal - and in any case have them come and dispose of the animal for you if it is behaving unusually. Always wear gloves and jeans and sturdy shoes when handling wild animals! It's also a good idea to wash the trap down with a bleach solution and let it dry thoroughly after each use, before handling it again.)

....Just a note to add that I've had this for about a year now and have trapped and relocated twelve raccoons and six possums and it's still working great. I've left it out in the rain most of the time I've had it, too, but just a little WD-40 now and then keeps it snap-happy. Excellent investment!

I had one of these when I was a kid (many many years ago) and I think the latest design is less sturdy than they used to be, but nevertheless this is still a great gadget for critter catching without harming the critter. We had an unknown varmit using our swimming pool as a toilet during the nights, so I ordered this to "catch and transfer."

It took about a week, but the culprit turned out to be a large sized racoon. We were able to safely transport him out to the wilds of the everglades so he could be with his own kind. The trap worked well for us and with proper care will last for many years.

I've been trapping for 50 years. Using Havahart for as long as I can remember. Had to get more traps recently and discovered the current models just are not as sturdy as the old ones. Model 1045 and 1050 both worked fine for opossum, feral cat, squirrels, rabbits and raccoons. Neither held a trapped armadillo, even though armadillo pictures are on the boxes and at least one place specifically recommended the 1050 for armadillos. The armadillo just kept pushing on the bottom of the closed door until the top of the trap was bent upward enough for the spring mechanism to just flop out, so nothing held the door closed. Older models have a slightly different design and heavier reinforcing wire around the openings.

We've had this trap for about 3 weeks and have caught 3 raccoons, 2 groundhogs and an opossum. Setting, baiting and releasing are simple functions. We're very happy with the purchase.

This is advertized as being made for large raccoons. First caught a juvenile raccoon, but by morning the coon had nearly wrecked the trip mechanism and escaped. After repairing and reinforcing the bottom trip mechanism we able to catch and keep the coon without it escaping. In the final analysis the trap does work, but needs to be reinforced in the area associated with the bottom trip mechanism. Rating is 3 star based on the poor design of the bottom trip mechanism.

It's great at trapping raccoons! I've catch a raccoon almost every night that I put it out - just throw some old fruit or dog food in there.

The only problem, however, is that it's no so great at getting the critter out. You have to put your hand right up in there and unlatch it and open it. When you do that, there's no way to keep it open. Their instruction manual shows a picture of a hand jamming a tree limb in there to prop the door open so the critter can escape. What?!? No way. When I open that up, the raccoon bolts out in about 1/2 second, brushing by my hand that's holding the door open. The idea of ramming a tree twig in there is absurd and a product of a poor design. There needs to be a better and safer way to reopen this thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked!!!, May 26, 2008

I tried everything for Mr. Groundhog. He was quite content and was not
leaving after ammonia, moth balls, ripping down the lattice around the deck, bleach in the holes. I was just about to give up and live with the fact that nature had defeated me when I read all the reviews about this particular trap. Believe me, I had my reservations as I have never ever trapped anything in my life.
But to my sweet surprise it worked on day 3. It probably would of worked sooner, but I didn't follow directions and put my bait in the wrong spot. He did go in and eat it however, so it would of worked on day 1. Day 2, he must of gotten in there and eaten again. My advice would be to cram whatever your bait is way under the plate so that the animal has to work at getting it.
We eventually caught him with one apple slice stuck way under the plate.

Thank you so much for this trap. I can now enter the backyard and walk on the deck in peace without looking to see where my furry friend is and if he is going to dart at anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL DESIGNED. AWESOME. THANK YOU, May 28, 2010

This review is from: Havahart 1050 Live Animal Two-Door Large Raccoon and Opossum Cage Trap (Lawn & Patio)
My first review ever...

AWESOME WELL DESIGNED UNIT. THE RACCOON I CAUGHT WAS MEDIUM SIZED BUT I DO FEEL CONFIDENT THAT A LARGE COON WOULD BE UNABLE TO ESCAPE THIS TRAP.

So this is my first trapping device and trapping experience. When it first arrived, I inspected the design. Very well made. Releasing the animal though would be the trick I would have to learn so I have some advice for anyone buying this trap. The installation manual says to use a stick to keep the door open.. YEAH, RIGHT, OK!!!!! The animal I caught was a nice size RACCOON. Not a chance I was gonna risk being bit trying to put a stick in the door opening. So I did the following.

I covered entire trap with a tarp first. Transported animal 10 miles away. I layed the trap on the ground still with tarp over trap. Then I hooked a 6-8 foot electrical wire to the cage door so that all I had to do once I unlocked the cage door was to pull the wire causing to the door to lift open. I got in the truck of my car for the releasing part so as to be off the ground and on a different level than the raccoon. Next, I pulled the wire and now the raccoon, being covered with the tarp, now saw a lighted opening. He quickly realized he now had the ability to escape. So, he darted out of there and ran off. At first, I was very nervous about the release, however, having caught a squirel the night and figuring out the best way to release that help emensely with releasing the coon.

I did my research before buying this trap as I quickly learned that you have to buy a quality trap or else there is a very good chance the animal could escape or get hurt trying. I am more than satisfied with this trap.

Grabbing the old cockroach hotel line, you'll get the picture that this is an outstanding trap for bigger critters.

I am a real estate investor. From time to time we get critters, usually squirrels. We have two Have-A-Hart brand traps that are most effective. When complaints came in about a racoon taking up residence at one of our places, It was a natural to go to the supplier we have experience with for a model of trap to grab the bigger guys.

I rate this product as 4.8. Not absolutly perfect, but darn close. We had trapped the racoon within 24 hours of having set it.
