Step-by-Step Trapping Guide

Before using a live trap, please consult your local laws regarding trapping and releasing wildlife.

Step 1: Place bait in back of trap

Stray cats: Fish, Meats, Chicken

Step 2: Set the trap

Set the live animal trap in the location of the nuisance animal. You can camouflage the trap by placing twigs and leaves on
top. You can also leave an unset baited
trap for a few days to entice the animal.

Step 3: Check the trap regularly

Animals can become stressed if caged for long periods of time. Hot and cold weather conditions can also harm the animal.

Other reviewers have said that the trap is difficult to assemble, and I think I know what happened. I had to order 2 traps. When I took the first one out of the cage, an L-shaped rod with a hook at one end came out of the cage. If I had not had a second trap to use as an example, I would have had difficulty, too. When you take the trap out of the cage, you will be directed to hold it by the handle and let it fall into shape. DO NOT remove the L-shaped rod (called the trigger rod.) If it is not hooked to the trigger when you take it out of the box, do so when you get to step 8 of "Setting Up the Stray Cat Rescue Cage." Be careful not to bend it when you thread the short end of the trigger rod through the underside of the trigger pan. As long as the trigger rod is in place, this trap is very easy to put together. Only minor assembly is required.

Now that the instructions are out of the way, here's my actual review: this trap works very well. It is sturdy, and it is sensitive enough to trap a small cat. When I caught the cat, I took it to the vet to be neutered. I asked the technician if he knew how to work the cage door and he said yes, because it was the same type of cage they kept on-hand for emergencies. It's nice to know that this trap is used by professionals.

The rescue kit includes a burlap cover. DO NOT USE IT! Seriously, get the cover out of your home as soon as you take it out of the box. It has the most hideous chemical smell I've ever encountered. I took a chance and washed both of the covers, but even after 4 long, hot-water washings, the smell did not diminish. And (I swear this is true) my washing machine now smells like the God-awful things. The stench from the covers filled my entire first floor and gave everyone a sore throat and burning eyes. I am going to write a letter to the Havahart company telling them about this issue.

In short, if you have a critter problem, this trap will work perfectly, but DON'T USE THE COVER!

I purchased a pair of these on behalf of my mother who wanted to trap some cats she was feeding outdoors before the city stepped in to take care of neighborhood complaints. These cats were accustomed to being fed by her but some of them were not tame enough for her to handle herself. Since we were planning to haul the cats across town up to 24 hours after we had trapped them it was important that mom should be able to feed and water the cats while in the trap.

These traps worked well for the most part. First of all they ship flat and when they arrived I thought it was only the first of the two, however upon inspection the package was two shipping boxes taped together. These are very thin when they are folded for storage too.

The construction is solid, setup and operation are pretty straightforward although at first there were a few pieces that were not obvious in their function. The printed manual has many diagrams but it is somewhat confusing to me. I simply decided to play with the items until I found their proper uses.
The trigger for the trap door doesn't take much pressure to spring which is good for small animals. The spring loaded trap door swings down fast but probably not hard enough to injure any animal that may be in the way at the time. I tested it on my forearm which didn't scratch my skin or leave any bruising.

The biggest problem with this trap is that the feeding partition that you can insert to change food & water isn't as secure as it ought to be. One of the cats my mother trapped escaped when she was changing it's food. Of course this cat was afraid to go anywhere near the trap afterward and we had to give up on capturing it.

I purchased this item through Amazon.com This kit is defective. The trigger rod will not fit in the trigger and the company has neglected my request for help, entered on their Website as an "email." No response to three requests. I took this trap to the Humane Society here in town, they could not get it working. They referred me to a store which sells traps, "Tractor Parts," and their traps look the same. The gentleman there worked on it for a time and could not fix it. He stated this rod and trigger needed bending in order for it to work. Taking this thing apart and spending money to return it is not an option for me -- I'm 77 years old and fed up. I think things should work when sold to you. Suzy

I've trapped a dozen cats and had them all fixed using this trap. They won't escape the trap if you look carefully at how that locking bar works. You have to make sure you poke it through TWO holes going through the trap, one above, one below, then make sure as you slide it across you poke it through the OTHER TWO HOLES at the other side, top and bottom. Each of the two metal rods on that locking piece goes through a hole going in and a hole going out. You want to make sure the door can't be pushed open at one end by a feisty feline. If you do it right, not even a huge male cat will escape. It does take a little practice. Get really familiar with the trap BEFORE you actually try to trap a cat. ALSO...a few people complained that the long bar that trips the trap closed won't fit into the little hook with the closed curved piece that is attached to the trap. I used a thick screw driver end to pry apart the little closed end a little so I could slip the long bar through it. You really have to become familiar with the trap before using it, but it's a fantastic, well made trap. I've purchased a bunch of these traps, and given them to other people to trap, neuter, and release cats in their neighborhoods. I showed each one of them how to put the trap together, and trap correctly. None of them have had a cat escape. Just get really familiar with the trap before trapping a cat. Cats are strong, smart, and some of them are as feisty as jungle cats, but they are beautiful animals who need our love and care. Fix them, feed them, and give them some shelter.
