I wanted to protect my patio from raccoons invading my bird feeder. The unit works but has room for improvement.

The good: Long battery life (2 Mo's CONTINUOUS operation on 2 D cells (3.0v)).
I tried rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries (2.5 v) and they did work but I could not measure fence voltage and suspect it to be a bit lower because of the half volt difference.
Nice safe all plastic case so you won't get shocked.
Does not kill the animals but feels like a shock from walking across a carpet then touching the door know. Startling, slight snap, but safe.
Pulses on and off (briefly) at one second intervals.
Neon light to show the pulse.
Plus-minus or hi-earth 'screw' terminals are not also banana jacks. (Too bad)

So-so:
The unit emits a slight charge discharge sound. Enough to attract a curious raccoon, who then left it alone.
Comes with a plastic spike that's only used to hold the unit. You must supply a ground rod or run ground wires or both as part of the fence. Wire, ground rod insulators, etc., are NOT included I guess to keep the cost down. You will need them.

It would be nice if the unit could automatically turn on when dark but it doesn't. On-off is a rocker switch. Too bad I can't turn it on remotely or from indoors.

The bad:
(The battery compartment was designed by an idiot.) two heavy D cells are inserted vertically (watching orientation) then a plastic spring loaded bottom must slide into one tiny point and while still holding everything you install the thumbscrew. It's just a dumb design. Lucky I left enough slack in all the wires leading to it I was able to turn it upside down to make battery loading easier BUT even then with the spring loaded clip it's difficult. The spring door should be hinged.

This fence energizer is quite effective - the critters bothering my garden and bird feeder soon learned to leave it alone! I watched a zapped raccoon stand back, study it, and then run off. It came back later, but didn't approach the post/wires (at least I think it was the same one). Battery power means it can be used where there is no source of electricity, and the intermittent charge won't trap and kill animals (it just gives them a quick zap). The slight noise it produces does not seem to disturb birds that visit my feeder, with the unit mounted right below the feeder. Faults: The plastic spike to support the unit is much too short to be useful. Since the wire connections are on the bottom of the unit and putting it on the spike puts the unit only a few inches off the ground, weeds/grass can reach the wires and short them out practically overnight. Batteries are also loaded from the bottom, so it would have to be removed to change the batteries. Fortunately, there is also a provision for hanging it on a screw on a post.

This little box is a heck of a buy. If you don't think you can have a functional electric fence only using 2 D-cell batteries, just put your finger on it..
Great product, good price easy to use.
Only con is battery compartment is a little awkward to use, but battery life is good so not a big deal.
Highly recommend.

I only needed to fence a small garden(10'x10') to keep raccoons and possums from digging up seedlings. Set up the fence, drove a copper pipe 4' into the ground and turned it on - simple. The unit worked just fine all afternoon and gave a nice jolt when I brushed against the fencing. I checked it before I went to bed around 10PM and it was still ticking along. Overnight temperatures dropped to just below 50F degrees, and when I checked it this morning the fencer was no longer running. I turned it off, turned it back on and it charged and fired once then stopped.

I unhooked it from the fence and brought it into the house to check the batteries and they were still above 1.5v. I swapped in a brand new set of Duracells just to double check and the unit still would only charge and fire once after turning it on. After warming up for about 30 minutes I turned it back on and, sure enough, it fired right up and kept running.

I checked the owners manual supplied with the unit and I didn't see any mention of operational temps listed at all.

I live in a Rual area with an abundance of squirrels that insisted in raiding by fenced and netted garden area. Every year I find my tomatoes half eaten by the varmits before they have time to rippen on the vine. I ran accross this solution and I am now a happy campper as I have vine rippen tomatoes for the first time since I started gardening.

The first unit I tried failed after the first local rain storm with water leaking out of the bottom of the battery compartment. Amazon quickly replaced it and this time I sealed all of the screw holes with silcon seal purchased from Lowes. Didnt take much. I run it 7/24 as we also have other varmits (racoons, possums, dogs, cats, etc.) in the area. It has performed flawlessly now for 6 weeks. My fence around my 10x10 plot is 3 strands 4 inches, 8 inches, and 36 inches abouve the ground. The top strand also has a ground wire on the back side of the insulators so it gets them if they decide to jump on the fence.
