Not bad, but not the BNL you're used to.,
By Jonathan L Wilson (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Havana Winter (MP3 Download)
All in all I'm not overly impressed with Kevin Hearn's first solo effort. I had recently listened to former BNL front man Steven Page's "Page One" and was thoroughly impressed. As such I decided to give Kevin's solo album a shot. While Page's album reminded me of earlier Barenaked Ladies work Hearn's album has a somewhat static feel to it. All of the tracks feel very much the same and do not vary in musical style enough. Additionally at only seven songs it feels a bit short for an album, though I suppose I can let this one slide as it is a solo debut. That being said what is there is relatively solid and certainly listenable. While I don't expect it to make it into a weekly rotation I can see myself coming back to this album to enjoy Hearn's rich vocal skills and the album's sophisticated guitar work. Its worth the money but only just.

More Than Just A Barenaked Lady,

In my opinion, Kevin Hearn is largely responsible for an artistic rebirth in the band "barenaked ladies". This CD, which I believe to be his solo debut, proves that. Stand-outs include Coma and In the Shade. Lou Reed guests on several tracks which is a super cool bonus. Will there be more from Barenaked ladies? I hope so. More from his solo career? There better be!
