Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–Magee has a reassuring tone to her writing, affirming that a qualified expert is behind this series. Each book presents summaries within the context of real-world situations (questions to ask physicians, how to navigate supermarket aisles, what to order at a restaurant). This approach results in worthy information and delicious recipes, but other than a brief acknowledgement that some of the diseases may manifest in late adolescence, there are no discernible indicators that teens factor much in the target audience. There are no photographs and diagrams, demonstrating that the series may be best recommended to those who are specifically interested in the disease and are looking for workable lifestyle changes to allay their symptoms.

More About the Author

I'm THE RECIPE DOCTOR and my motto is...changing the way America eats, one recipe at a time! My other motto is...healthy food isn't going to do anyone any good if no ones eating it--it HAS to taste good and be easy to make.

So, are you with me? I spent a year researching all the research examples of FOOD SYNERGY (how components within food and between food work together in your body for maximum health benefit) and the result was one of my favorite books: FOOD SYNERGY (Rodale, 2008). If you don't have a lot of time, read the introduction and go straight to chapter 7. This chapter will blow your mind...it's the "aha" chapter and it puts everything together and shows you how the 10 synergy superfoods can transform your diet. The rest of the book is filled with fun and easy to make recipes and each recipe includes "food synergy notes" which list for you the various food synergy partnerships represented in that recipe (and there are usually at least 3 in each).

My next book is coming out in Spring 2010, TELL ME WHAT TO EAT IF I SUFFER FROM HEART DISEASE, and it's going to help anyone who is at risk of heart disease or has heart disease. I'm really excited about this book because it includes and makes sense of the latest research advancements. I had several well known cardiologists review the book and I'm thrilled that they loved it and thought it would help their patients greatly.

On a lighter note... I often get asked what my favorite type of cooking is and hands down it's good old homestyle cooking...you know...fruit crisps, lasagna, oven-fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies, etc. Nothing too fancy, just delicious! So, imagine how much fun I had working on my cookbooks "Comfort Food Makeovers" and "Fry Light, Fry Right!."

I love to "makeover" all your favorite recipes into healthful versions that taste just as great but have less calories, fat, and saturated fat and more smart fats (like omega-3s), and fiber and nutrients.

Please join my FREE Recipe Doctor club where I email you one of my all-time favorite recipe makeovers each month (just go to my website, www.recipedoctor.com and look in the upper right-hand corner).

If you've made it this far down the page, I'll let you in on a little secret--My big professional hope is to have a cooking show (a healthy one of course). In my books I try to write so that you feel like I'm right there with you holding your hand as we talk about whatever the subject of the book is (diabetes, menopause, IBS, etc...) Maybe with a cooking show, I really can be there with you!

5.0 out of 5 stars It DOES tell you which food/drinks to avoid!, September 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: If I Have Acid Reflux (Tell Me What to Eat) (Paperback)
I cannot believe a previous reviewer mentions that this book doesn't tell you what to avoid for acid reflux. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the subject not to mention a couple of chapters that are all about answering common Q & A on acid reflux in general and diet and acid reflux. Plus chapters on eating out and getting through the holidays.

My gastroenterologist gave me a copy of this book and told me that it was the best and easiest read on the subject and he was right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Help at Hand, June 16, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: If I Have Acid Reflux (Tell Me What to Eat) (Paperback)
I have just been diagnosed with Acid Reflux and realised that I had to make drastic changes to my diet and lifestyle. I bought Tell Me What To Eat If I Have Acid Reflux and have found it very informative. Elaine Magee covers everything I needed to know and more. The recipes are useful as are hints such as chewing gum after meals and raising the head of the bed. I also didn't know what I should and shouldn't eat, but I do now and it has helped immensely. It is also great to know that I'm not alone and that there are millions other suffers out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read!, February 20, 2002
By
This review is from: If I Have Acid Reflux (Tell Me What to Eat) (Paperback)
Believe it or not I actually enjoyed reading this book on acid reflux. My husband has had this for a couple of years now and I loved the way this book put it all together for us. It told me exactly what I needed to know, in terms we could easily understand, in the order I needed to read them in. The 10 Food Steps To Freedom lay out the diet recommendations in a very simple way. Then there are several supporting chapters on holiday eating, eating out in restaurants, and recipes you can't live without, that help you more easily follow the food steps. My husband is already feeling better and we've only been practicing the food steps for a couple of weeks!
Lots of good information, and I enjoyed reading it.
