~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Nell Sullivan is fiery, easily distracted by cookies, and doomed to wear the peach monstrosity at her best friend’s wedding.

And she’s a witch.

Daniel Walker is a former baseball player turned bored hacker looking for a challenge. Hacking Nell's online gaming world is going to get him a lot more than he bargained for.

A prophecy says they will make babies together – but when it comes to the love life of a modern witch and a hacker, prophecy might not get a vote.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Yet September 13, 2012
By reader
Format:Kindle Edition
To be up front. I have bought every book of Debra Geary's that she's published. I have also reviewed several of her books (along with other author's). Ms. Geary has also gifted me with copies of a couple of her books, both - as a thank you for reviewing, but also to give to the school library where I volunteer.

With, "To Have and to Code", finally, Debra has written the shining beginning of her series. Like the Star Wars Series, Debra started with the center of the story. Introduced her characters and branched out from there. The first book she wrote in her "A Modern Witch Series" was "A Modern Witch A Modern Witch (A Modern Witch Series: Book 1) and she has added 3 others. Finally, with To Have and To Code (A Witch Central Romance) Ms. Geary has taken us to the beginning of the story and told of the romance between Nell and Daniel. It has been a long awaited story that centers around the driving force of Witch Central, Nell Sullivan. We meet Nell, as a young woman, whose online game called "Realm" is one of the most talked-about and successful Internet games of the day. Through the book we see her mature and meet her destiny (or The Prophecy, as her parents call it)

Through all the other books we have gotten peeks and glimpses into the story of how Nell and Daniel met, their romance, and the incredible start to the series. Finally, our imaginations don't have to run wild. Debra has written a great, fully-fledged story that gives the 'back-story' to many of the friends, relatives, neighbors, witches and non-witches that have populated her other books.

True to form.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great series -mediocre book - good price September 19, 2012
By David G
Format:Kindle Edition
I love the Modern Witch series. I have read every book of Debra Geary's. This book was a gift from Ms Geary because of previous reviews. Therefore I feel like a bit of a cad when I say I was not thrilled with this book and find the reviews to date lopsided, like people read a different book than I did. I love this series. I look forward to reading every book that comes out. But if you have not read the series, do NOT start here. I expect many of her fans to vehemently disagree, but in my opinion this one book in the series is at best only 3 stars, being generous, and I gave it 2 stars for people who are not already fans of the series.

Why did I not enjoy this one as much? It was not boring to read, but it was nowhere near as enjoyable as other books in the series. What was missing was the humor, the quirkiness and the joy de vivre of the previous books. I felt like I already knew Nell and did enjoy learning more about her past. Jamie however, seemed immensely subdued in this novel versus his older self from other books. Nell's mother is a potential major characters who has not been explored much in this series. What we got on her mother was intriguing. but not in depth. Sammy, Nell's best friend comes new to the series; but then disappears to Texas and obscurity from the rest of the series (to date) An explanation on Nell's famous nutella cookies did add to the linkage with the series.

Daniel, her future husband and new found romance was a major disappointment. Is he going to stand up to this witch who keeps pushing him around? Love does not just happen because Cupid shoots his magic arrow and there was little background that explained why a successful, athletic, genius would put up with the abuse Nell dumped on him. Lust and physical attraction are there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Books that take you to a happy place September 14, 2012

If you haven't read any of the Witch Central books, you're missing out. They wrap you up in love and family and just plain good feelings. The characters make you wish you could be their friends, and make you wish (just a little more) that magic was real...and for the time you are lost in the stories, they are and it is.

2.0 out of 5 stars ho-hum September 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
To be honest, this was the first book I've read of the author's. I really liked the premise, and the first few chapters had me hooked despite a few editing issues, but the story quickly went downhill for me after she told him she was a witch. Completely unrealistic timeline, all of a sudden he is supposedly in love with her and believes she's a witch, but little to no relationship development. The writing quickly degenerated, and I couldn't even finish the book. Honestly shocked at all the positive reviews. Maybe it's because this was the first one I read from her, and I wasn't as invested in the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice story but needs proofreading October 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It seems like there is a lot more to this story. This is the first of Ms. Geary's books that I have read, and I did enjoy it, but the characters felt underdeveloped. Now that I know that this is a compliment to her previous works, I understand a little more. There were also a few instances where there were obvious typos that I hope get resolved at a later date, most of which I can get past, but using the wrong last name for a main character on more than one occasion did bother me. I'll likely pick up the first book in the "A Modern Witch" series and go from there.
