ok when I first heard the dead boys the first song i ever heard was "son of sam" and I loved it. then I heard others like "3rd genration nation" "calling on you" "I won't look back" and "ain't it fun". The words to all these songs are really good. I like the dead boys first album but really this one's my fav.
that's just what i think

Not as filthy or mean as their first album, this is still a solid cd. It's not as gritty as the first cd. It sounds more polished, maybe too polished. There are some great songs on this cd. Great song, "I won't look back", i really like the lyrics on this song, mostly cause i can relate to what is being said: "All my boyhood friends told me i'd end up friendless or in jail" "All the girls at the school dance, wouldn't give me a second chance". Damn, i didn't even get a first chance. Also, "third generation nation" is Rockin'. Great Rolling stone cover of "tell me", even though i never heard the original. "son of sam" is a good tune, but a little too slow. "flame thrower love" is excellent. "Aint it fun" is a great slow moving, nasty, spitefull, sad song. No songs make you want to press the skip button. Thats more than i can say for most crummy music.

If you're a Dead Boys fan and DON'T have this, then you need it. What are you doing without "Ain't It Fun" and "Tell Me" (a great Stones cover!). But if you're NOT a Dead Boys fan, and you want to know what all the fuss is about, don't start with this record. Go and get "Young Loud and Snotty", which doesn't have a weak track in the lot. This album, however, does. "3rd Generation Nation" is a semi-weak attempt to write something as anthemic as "Sonic Reducer" while "Son Of Sam" which is supposed to be creep comes off as campy more then anything. When you're sitting down to make your ultimate Dead Boys mix CDR you'll be lost without this record (and the live one, with the awesome unrecorded "Detention Home") but as an album itself, it doesn't hold up. A lot of the songs from the 1st were half stolen from Peter Laughner and Rocket From The Tombs (on this one they give proper credit with "Ain't It Fun" having joint Cheetah/Peter credits) and on this one I think they tried to write it all on their own, and the final product is...less then spectacular.

This album is really 3 and a half stars (if you're stupid enough to give stars to a punk rock album) but the boys get points for pushing the nasty envelope. Stiv liked eating his own snot on stage.

The album itself is one of the better offerings from the D. B.s. "3rd Generation Nation" is a clean, driving version that gets the album going like projectile vomit off the stage and onto a journalist. While I always though "Son of Sam" should be a better song, this version has some guts. The Dead Boys aren't my favorite punk band of the REAL (and only) punk rock era...they're snotty little show offs from frigging Ohio. But they've got spunk...naughty little boys.
