Was Paladin the smartest man in the Old West? Have Gun Will Travel is certainly the smartest Western ever broadcast, as this collection, including the original pilot--"Three Bells to Perdido" and "The Outlaw"--should convince you in short order. Richard Boone plays the unglamorous but still way-cool gun for hire, living large in a San Francisco hotel, scanning the nation's papers for potential employers. In the pilot, he travels to Mexico to take a young Jack Lord to justice, relying on his brains to get him out of a nearly impossible situation. In "The Outlaw," deep issues (for television) of honor and identity are explored as Paladin escorts the condemned Charles Bronson on one last trip to see his family. There's no question that this series deserved its long run and cult status--its topnotch acting and writing give it an unbeatable edge. --Rob Lightner

4.0 out of 5 stars Feast for Richard Boone fans, April 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Have Gun Will Travel 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Three Bells for Perdido was the first episode of the classic TV western, Have Gun, Will Travel. It set the stage for the episodes that followed and introduced us to the central character--Paladin. Well acted, taunt and authentic, a feast for those of us who love westerns. Watch for Jack Lord in his pre-Hawaii Five-O days as the villian. While not the BEST episode that the show produced, this episode also did not get lost in introducing the character and setting of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see episodes!, August 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Have Gun Will Travel 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The pilot, the last (or one of the last) episode, an episode about Chinese railworkers, and an all together weird episode. I hadn't seen any of these! I suggest you not watch the last episode (which is, strangely the first on the tape), until you have seen many of the other episodes, as it may change your perspective on the entire series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Paladin is the best., February 6, 2009
This review is from: Have Gun Will Travel 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
HSAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL is a great collection of the first season of Paladin. Great young guest stars, Jack Lord, Charles Bronson, make for interesting viewing. These shows bring back memories of childhood when I watched the show regularly.
