seemed to me like a shameless rip-off, June 20, 2002

This review is from: How to Have High Dollar Garage Sales (Paperback)
Look elsewhere, gentle reader. Everything in this pamphlet (truly, I consider this kind of effort a pamphlet, not a book) is really, really, painfully obvious.
My "favorite" part was the chapter devoted to "What To Do About Food During Your Garage Sale?" As far as I could tell, the chapter consisted of the author's recipes for meals. As in, you'll need to feed your family during a yard sale, so here are recipes you can cook for them. I could hardly believe my eyes: Is it really possible that she had absolutely no insider information to share, so she turned the book (pamphlet) into her personal cookbook? You know, I think I'll write a book (pamphlet) about bicycle repair and include a chapter called "What To Do About Food While Repairing Bicycles?". Then I'll point out that you might get hungry while repairing bicycles and I'll offer you twenty of my favorite recipes.
Perhaps you're tempted to buy it anyway because of the Booklist review. How could it get such a rave review if it is completely stupid?
That's a very good question. I bought the book because of the Booklist review myself. It is impossible for me to reconcile the utter uselessness of this book with the rave review it received from "Booklist" in 1989. I remember 1989, and journalists weren't any more or less out of touch with reality back then. So I can only imagine that Ms. Hines was a personal friend of the Booklist reviewer.
Who knows? In any case, I predict you will think this book is not worth a single penny ...And that you will not be able to unload it on anybody else at your garage sale!
