"You Have Killed Me" is a great song and a real grower. upon first listen, i wasn't overly impressed...but i liked it okay. by the third listen, it was permanently fixed in my head. which is a sign of a good pop song. it's a very simple tune that matches Morrissey's beautiful croon with flattering effect.
Moz's love for The New York Dolls has never been a big secret so it's surprising that it took this long for him to cover one of their songs on record. he's been known to use "Subway Train" as a segway to other songs in the live setting and here "Human being" sounds great. and it's nice to hear Boz on sax again. "I Knew I Was Next" is another very solid entry to the Ringleader b-sides. featuring a hooky chorus and a very strong vocal melody, and a cool 60's hammond organ popping up in the refrain, giving it a quick garage band sound. overall, the track shares a similiar sound to that of the Maladjusted b-side "I Can Have Both." great. i have two (minor) gripes about this cd. one, the promotional sticker on the front of the cd case states that there is a fold-out poster included inside. which is surely not the case. there is a picture of Morrissey inside the cd insert...but that is not a poster! and must these kinds of stickers be stuck directly on the case? why do record pressing plants do this? errr...bugs me. just stick it on the shrink wrap, not the case. so, that's my second gripe. but these are complaints regarding the packaging, not the actual music. oh, yea, there's a video on here too. Morrissey's strong point has never been videos, but thankfully , this is a pretty good one. enjoy!

Short but Sweet,

Unlike most artists who release singles padded out with 20 minutes of remixes Morrissey's single releases come with new songs instead not included on his new album and they're all solid. You Have Killed Me is a great new song,I'm a Human Being has fantastic energy and Good Looking Man Around Town is a 2 minute song more satisfying than many average 5 minute songs. To me though the real reason to get this is the addictive I Knew I Was Next.As a longtime Morrisssey fan since the Smiths I think it's one of his coolest songs. If you're a Morrissey fan or even if you're not don't let this 4 song ep slip by!

Well worth the money for these 3 non-album b-sides. Human Being is the strongest but they are all worth while.

Morrissey Upholds His Fine Tradition On Singles,
By
This review is from: You Have Killed Me / Human Being / I Knew I Was (Audio CD)
If you purchase a Morrissey single, you should know one thing - you will get your money's worth. For whatever reason, Morrissey always seems to save some of his best tracks for the B sides to singles, and this one carries on the tradition.
"You Have Killed ME", the A-side, was one of the highlights to Ringleader Of The Tormentors. While the album was not bad, it just wasn't a genius LP. However, this song most definately is. He shows off a bit of wit with the phrasing "As I live and breathe, you have killed me." A 3 minute pop song that shows off Morrissey's strengths - his wit, his voice, and the fact is he knows how to carry a tune through. The B-sides show that Morrissey certainly won't give us filler for the B-sides. "Human Being" is definately one of his recent best songs, and follows in the vain of "Friday Mourning" and "Never Played Symphonies" of being simply great songs that will get ignored because he didn't have the sense to put it on an LP. Morrissey stops being so damn coy for six minutes and just comes across as honest. Add a saxophone solo, and you got a classic right there. "I Knew I Was Next" still keeps the honesty going as he is clearly singing about the fact that a lot of people hate him and ignore his talents. Clearly a reflection on the 7 years of silence where he was simply just an outcast from the world. Think of it as the follow up to "You Know I Couldn't Last" from You Are The Quarry. He comes off not spiteful, but instead of self-fufilled. Another classic track. The weakest track on here is "Good Looking Man About Town". For whatever reason, it just doesn't resonate with me. Morrissey is back to being coy, and it just doesn't work that well. It still is a good track, but it is one of the few Morrissey B-sides that actually does have B-side written all over it. Essentially, if you are a Morrissey fan, you have to buy this. For Americans, it covers both UK singles, and for everyone else, it gets the B-sides onto one disc. Also, for some fun, look at the CD itself. Not only does the top look like a 45 record, but so does the bottom. I don't know how they did it, but it is cool to actually see them not just replicate the grooves on only the top, but also the bottom. It's the little flourishes like those that make this single feel special. |
