Book Description

March 29, 1999
THE END OF INNOCENCE . . .

1n 1845, Thoreau found the meaning of life at Walden Pond. Now police are searching for the meaning of death there--the grisly work of a cunning serial killer with a unique calling card. To psychiatrist Harry Klein, the chilling case hits too close to home: The murder suspect is his live-in lover's ex-boyfriend, a man embroiled in a heated battle over developing Walden Pond.

Klein is drawn into the center of the horrific case--in a search for a killer that turns into a harrowing struggle between evil and an innocent place, between a serial killer who calls himself the True Believer and Klein, who has everything to live for and maybe nothing left to lose. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Back for a fourth adventure, Harry Kline, a Concord, Mass., forensic psychiatrist, enlists the help of his fiery FBI agent girlfriend, Veronica Pace, to track down a twisted serial killer called The True Believer, whose victims were all active in a fight to stop land development near Henry David Thoreaus famous Walden Pond. As Kline struggles to discover if the killer is Stephen (Veronicas college lover, who just happens to be in Concord), he also fights an inner demonthe fact that he may have prostate cancer. Luber (Pray for Us Sinners), himself a forensic psychologist, is for the most part up to the mark here. At times the action seems forced and the dialogue stilted. Still, Luber will satisfy his fans, once again displaying an uncanny ability to find the perfect fact or scene from Concord history to illuminate the ambiguities of even the most heinous crime scene.

Review

"His engaging characters are intricately connected, yet they stand distinct and clear like columns throughout the story. A classy writer."
--JANE LANGTON
   Author of The Shortest Day

"[Luber's] books are top-choice reading material with tight plotting, well-drawn characters, and thoughtful writing. . . . Luber is one of those rare storytellers who can tell a riveting tale and imbue it with just the right mix of wisdom and warmth, emotion and knowledge. . . . Whether he is telling us about religious struggles, clinical psychology, family dynamics, or New England architecture, he does it with a subtle but talented hand."
