Editorial Reviews

What does a wildly successful purveyor of ‘80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you’re Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band’s ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn’t let their band’s lukewarm ‘90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ’s songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they’re seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track’s sarcastic riposte to the ’04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can’t overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics–it’s also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can’t Go Home." Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future--yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past.

This Dual Disc edition also features all album tracks but one in High Resolution Surround Sound as well as the video for "Have a Nice Day" and an ‘04 Live From Atlantic City featurette with six live cuts. -- Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - this one's winner, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Have A Nice Day (Audio CD)
I have been a Bon Jovi Fan for a looong time and I have always been excited about new albums. I love Keep The Faith, New Jersey and all the others. Until now THESE DAYS has been my number one favorite... but now, w/ Have a Nice Day being released my favorite might change.

This is an incredible album. It's fun, energetic and highly emotional. Jon Bon Jovi's voice is rich and pure and very strong. Richie Sambora, Tico Torres, David Bryan and Hugh McDonald have done an outstanding job w/powerful guitar riffs, energetic drum beats , melodic keyboards and nice bass runs and so much more.

Songs like "Last man Standing", "I want to be loved", and my favorite "Welcome to Wherever You Are" are all highly addictive, as is the whole album itself.

The dual disc is a real treat for any Bon Jovi fan and worth the little extra money! You get a high resolution dolby surround sound AND stereo sound version of this album (w/out the 13th track - duet w/ Jennifer Nettles "Who says you can't go home") and some fun video clips from their concert in Atlantic city (which is great because some of the songs are songs from the Box Set); the "Have a nice day" video and a clip of Bon Jovi EPK... some nice extras!

Thank you to the guys of Bon Jovi for making me more proud than ever to be their fan! With this album Bon Jovi have outdone themselves!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi Rocks the house again!, December 8, 2005

I love this album. I can't even decide which song is my favorite! If you are a Bon Jovi fan... and more specifically, if you have ever seen the band perform live and loved it, this is the CD for you! The music on this CD was made to be performed live! It is a great mix of "kick-butt", stand on your feet, raise your hand in the air and sing along songs!!

Yes, I can understand why some people might say it is a "typical" Bon Jovi album. In some ways, I agree. The band knows what works for them, they know the kind of songs their fans love. They have sold over 100 million albums.... folks... it works!!!!

"Have a Nice Day" is a fun song, giving a little attitude to people by saying "Have a Nice Day" with a smirk! Oh... and on a side note, KUDOS to whoever came up with the red smirk logo!! Great idea, great marketing, and a lot of fun!

"Welcome to Wherever You Are" - is a song all about appreciating what you have been through in your life, and understanding "you're exactly where you're supposed to be". The best line in the song is; "When you want to give up and your heart's about to break, Remember that you're perfect; God makes no mistakes."

"Who Says You Can't Go Home" - In the US release of this album, there are 2 versions of this song. One is rock and the other has been labled more "country". It is the duet version of the song Jon sings with Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer of the country band "Sugar Land". There are more fidels, and strings in this version and a lot more harmony. It is actually a very good version... and you will be hearing it on country radio. How odd is that? But congrats to the guys for opening up their music!! Also, if you have not seen the CMT show 'CrossRoads' find a repeat! It is a show with a rock performer and a country performer joining together. The Bon Jovi/Sugar Land episode is GREAT!

"Last Man Standing" - This song sums up Bon Jovi! It is all about being the "last one of a breed". A live, living, breathing rock & roll performer. No tracks, no lip synching, no dancers, no diamonds! "Come and see, hear, feel.... the real thing."

I could go on about each song, but I think you get it! I have seen the guys on this tour and these songs are great! They have that "Bon Jovi hook" and are so much fun! The audience loves them and you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Crush Trilogy" Is Now Complete, November 17, 2005

I'll admit that Bon Jovi is simply delicious. For all us dreamers and believers they continue to sing songs of promise, of tomorrow and positivity; it's all I could ask for.

Granted, the last three albums have essentially been the same (especially the 1st singles off each), but that's alright, that's alright, that's alright, that's alright, that's alright.

:-)

Buy the album and let's make sure this band doesn't stop making people happy!
