Editorial Reviews

About the Producer

Flory G. Herman is a former pharmacist with a doctorate degree in pharmacy (University of Kentucky, 1982). She is a graduate of the New York Law School (1988) and was admitted to the New York State bar in January 1989. Her prior experience includes medical malpractice litigation, and most recently, a successful private practice in the field of adoption law in Amherst, New York. She is the proud adoptive mother of two children, Rachel (11) and Adam (8) and has been a member of the prestigious American Academy of Adoption Attorneys since 1994. This is Flory's first video production.

Flory's inspiration in producing "Roots and Branches" was to hear- and accurately communicate- the voices of those directly touched by adoption describe in their own words, their feelings about having been adopted. As an adoptive parent and adoption attorney, she is an avid proponent of the positive/respectful adoption language movement and the purpose behind it to educate society about adoption. She has always emphasized the use of positive adoption language ("PAL") both on a personal level at home and importantly, in the day to day practice of adoption where she represents adoptive and birth parents. In producing "Roots and Branches", she deferred to the voices of children and adults who have experienced first hand what it feels like to have been adopted and appreciated their positive viewpoint. While not all children who were adopted use a "universal" or "recommended" dialect of adoption, they proudly expressed their feelings about adoption in their own words- It is their legacy, and a legacy they are proud of.... their roots and branches. Let us listen to their voices and celebrate that wonderful legacy with them. I hope you enjoy this beautiful film's joyful and uplifting message.Flory G. Herman, Executive Producer "I Have Roots and Branches"... Personal Reflections on Adoption

Product Description

"WINNER: 2004 Film Advisory Board AWARD OF EXCELLENCE!" While the process of adoption has been receiving increasingly greater attention, the feelings of those touched by adoption are often overlooked. Director and executive producer Flory G. Herman, a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys since 1994, takes an intimate look at adoption in this new must-see 47 minute documentary-style film "I Have Roots and Branches"...Personal Reflections on Adoption, a 2004 winner of a prestigious Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence, recognized world-wide for quality family/children's entertainment. The film conveys a positive, encouraging and honest message about adoption, and is most appropriate for children viewers. Viewers will find out first hand how it feels to have been adopted and discover that all kids have common experiences growing up in their homes, surrounded by the families they know and love. Families formed through adoption, prospective adoptive and birth parents and professionals in the adoption community should not miss this wonderful film. The video is appropriate for schools and libraries as a resource for adoption education.

This is a beautiful, touching and inspiring film about adoption.
I saw this film at it's premiere and couldn't get the kids, the music and it's wonderful message out of my head. If you or your family has been touched by adoption, you won't want to miss this film. What a great gift this will make at holiday time for friends whose families are formed through adoption. This film is a positive, thoughtful and honest look at adoption- you hear the voice of the children and the birth mother, from whom the loving journey of adoption begins!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Film is a True Meaning of Open Adoptions, October 27, 2005

This film is awesome and just goes to show that adoption can be a wonderful experience for everyone involved. Having giving up a child for adoption, it has been a wonderful experience. It was the best thing I could have done for that child, knowing that this child has all the love in the world, and is being cared for and couldn't ask for a better family. I loved this film and have let friends borrow it, that have been adopted or have adopted children. I tell everyone about it that mentions adoption.
