Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Photos of bright, plasticine-relief birds vivify Oppenheim's bouncy, fact-based text, which encourages readers to look around at the many kinds of birds in the world. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 A wonderful picture book depicting the wide variety of birds seen throughout the year and in various types of habitats (i.e., marsh birds, sea birds, flat-footed fishing birds). The birds are described throughout in lyrical running verse. It is, however, the stunning, vibrantly colorful plasticine-relief illustrations that make this book so special. This medium gives depth and texture to the pages, the scenes often shown from a bird's eye view. The birds really do appear to dive, dip, glide, and tip. The clever details and excellent page design maximizing use of white space make for an exciting look at the world of birds for preschoolers and beginning independent readers. Even without a key to identify the depicted birds, this is a winner. Luann Toth, Summit Free Public Lib . , N.J.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing illustrations, beautiful text...younger kids too!, March 13, 2001
This review is from: Have You Seen Birds? (Paperback)
My two year old adores birds, and of all of our bird books, this is one of his absolute favorites. I'm not sure how much of the text he understands, but the illustrations, done in clay art, are beautiful, and he loves to identify the various species.

I don't mind reading it over and over because the poetic text stands up to intense rereadings and I love the cadence and rhythm of the text. The author has managed to emulate the careening freedom of flight by the flitting, dipping, racing style of her poetry. This is one of those books I wish we had in hardcover.

Fabulous story but poor condition of the book. The seller should have said it was in fair not good condition, if I had known the condition of it, I would not have purchased it. It did arrive promptly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, November 15, 2009
This review is from: Have You Seen Birds? (Hardcover)
This is another award-winning book by illustrator Barbara Reid and author Joanne Oppenheim. It has won the Canadian Council Children's Literature Prize, the Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award and the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian picture Book Award. Both Reid and Oppenheim have won numerous other awards also.

This book looks at birds of a feather from all over the place - birds of different sizes, birds in different places, birds doing different things. Woodland birds, night birds, farm birds and city birds - it covers them all, with 35 amazing illustrations depicting 58 different species of birds wonderfully rendered in Reid's highly detailed plasticine art. This is now one my favorite Barbara Reid books.
