It's been too long indeed since these recordings were available-recorded by Tex in nine sessions for Capitol Transcriptions from 1945 to 1947, these non-commercial sides are considered by many Ritter fans to be the best work he ever did, relaxed versions of cowboy ballads and then-contemporary country hits recorded with such crack sidemen as Merle Travis, Wesley Tuttle, Johnny Bond and Cliffie Stone. And, in true Bear Family fashion, this 4-CD set throws in Tex's 12 tunes for World Transcriptions, too, along with a beautiful booklet. 111 classic tunes.

I have long been a Tex Ritter fan and have loved his music. But from this anthology and the other Bear Family anthologies I have learned that Tex recorded a lot of songs, country songs, that he would have been better advised to stay away from. Much in this collection are, frankly, not very good. What I've come to realize is that Capitol Records, for whom he recorded so much, were very careful in selecting what to release to the record-buying public from Tex. And here Capitol Records served him very well. A lot of record companies are not that careful.
I am generally happy to have any Tex Ritter recordings but a great many of these were simply not worthy of him.
