This book has it all, from bittersweet romance, to international intrigue. You will learn a lot about the author's experience as a journalist, a professor and the forbidden woman in the Philippines he desperately loves. Highly recommended. You will be intrigued from cover to cover. Napagandang storya talaga!

Mangos,
This review is from: I Have Tasted the Sweet Mangoes of Cebu (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book, while George appears a bit naive for a self-professed Fil-Am, it is a good story. George passes away in October 2010. RIP, George & may you be tasting the sweet mangos now.

I am about ready to retire and have been doing background research on the possiblity of moving to the Philippines. On a website recently someone recommended this book as a way to begin to understand some of the Filipino mindset.
This is an interesting book about a single man's efforts to "return to his roots" in the Philippines. The story, which at times is somewhat niave, does document the author's efforts to fall in love with a mail order bride. The book does give one a sense of the culture and of, I believe, the innocents of the sometimes Philippine "hustle". I recomend this book if one has any interest in the culture and of the people, both in the Philippines and those in the USA.

Ok this book will never make the NY Time Best Sellers List, but for any Kano who has ever met his mate in Ceby this is a great read, or for that matter anyone considering a visit there.
My Brother married a girl there some years ago and late last year I married here sister. We just happened to stay at Eddie's every time we go there. Well we just got back from a visit to my Brother's and we accidently left the book there. He refuses to return it. Now I have to buy another becuase the book I bought my wife he refueses to return. George, tell me the Guard at Eddie's in the book was really Tasio? |
