Editorial Reviews

In 1973, Jim Croce was just hitting his stride as a rising singer/songwriter, enjoying hits with the songs &"Time in a Bottle," &"You Don't Mess Around With Jim," and &"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," when he died in the crash of a light plane en route to his next concert. Jim Croce: Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live is a documentary assembled by Ingrid Croce and A.J. Croce, respectively the late singer's wife and son. The material is centered around live footage of Croce taped for several television shows before his death. Also included are interviews with friends and fellow musicians (including Randy Newman and Kenny Loggins), a rare duet performance from Jim and Ingrid Croce, an animated cartoon interpretation of &" "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" created for The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, and home movies of Jim at his farm. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I was so happy to find this DVD of live performances by Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen, his incredible lead guitarist! It's the closest thing we have to seeing them live in concert now, and I'm so grateful this was released. The performances are wonderful, intimate, acoustic versions of many of Jim's hits and lesser known beauties. For me, it was a revelation to see Maury playing all the intricate lead guitar riffs that make Jim's sound so unique. Until I saw this footage I assumed, as I'm sure many did, that Jim was doing all the guitar work on these songs. I searched online to find out more about Maury, and he truly was a musical genius who took Jim's music to a higher level. He was killed with Jim in the 1973 plane crash, so this is footage to treasure of both of these amazingly talented and truly kind and gentle men.

The quality of this footage is amazing considering that it's from 1972-73 -- the remastering is incredible. Most of the footage is so clear that you feel you're in the same room with them. This is true even though the footage is from a variety of sources: TV shows, a PBS concert, a live "In Concert" show, etc. Three songs are not shown being played live, probably because live footage doesn't exist, so they're shown over photos and opening credits (Photographs & Memories), a photo montage (I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song), and documentary footage of Jim, Ingrid, and AJ on the farm (Time in a Bottle). It was especially touching seeing Jim romping with his 18-month-old son AJ -- wonderful and gut-wrenchingly sad at the same time, knowing he wouldn't live to see his son's second birthday.

By 2012 standards this video is really lacking, but if you're a Jim Croce fan and you know this is the only video available of the singer, then it's worth having. His stories about how he got to writing certain hit songs are very interesting. His singing voice is great and the voice quality overall on the video is very good. The family photos and background are a nice touch. I thought this would be more of a live concert with a lot of audience feedback, but it is just a series of clips, many without an audience. But it's still better than just listening to a greatest hits CD.

I was 16 when i heard Jim sing "I GOT A NAME".I used to listen to an American radio station hosted by a man called "Casey Casum" TOP 40.Living in Australia in the 70's was very far from American & English music of that time & most we received was always delayed by 6 months. When i heard the announcer claim that I GOT A NAME went to # 1 i was over the moon i just LOVED this type of music happy soon turned to SADNESS when the # 1 hit was by the LATE Jim Croce killed in a plane crash just that week of his # 1 hit. Jim was destined for greater things after so many life ballads to share he shared just a few only to leave well before his time.Yet from death came a life in his son A.J.Croce who grow to know of his fathers music just like us. This D.V.D.is a MUST HAVE if your in to "REAL LIFE" ballads in song I've never become tired of "RAPID ROY" or "BAD BAD LEROY BROWN" it was Jim's Life.I'm sure Jim would be proud of us all to know even "40 YEARS"on. his music still touches ones heart.

Jim's music is just as good in 2013 as it was in 1972/1973 - this video of his concerts (and slideshows set to his music) shows how Jim used his years of touring in bars and truck stops to create music that is memorable and fun. Anybody who heard Jim's music at his prime were shocked at his death in 1973 - this video is the best way to remember Jim at his prime.

This is a must-have DVD for any Jim Croce fan! Many parts of the DVD have amazing (for what I would expect for that time) video and sound quality. It's really heart-warming to see clear, live video of Jim to go along with his (and his partner Maury's) amazing talent. Plenty of great music and plenty of Jim's storytelling on this very well produced DVD.

God Bless you, Jim. Your music lives on in those who love you and in all of your fans.

Purchased directly from Amazon for $13.49.

Recently, my local PBS station aired an edited version of this DVD and immediately, my mother (who was in her early 30s during Croce's time) asked me to see if I could get it online. I too, have become a fan of Jim Croce and this DVD is better than I expected. It's about an hour of live television performances and the DVD has a separate commentary by his wife, Ingrid.

Some other reviewers have listed the songs/videos, so take a look at those for the details. I can say the quality is good considering the videos are from various live television performances (two are slideshows). Seeing Jim's facial expressions as he performs really elevates the listening enjoyment of his music.

If you're a Jim Croce fan and you don't have any DVDs of his live performances, then I highly recommend you get this one.

Hope that helps!
